Monsoon Safety OTJS COMMITTEE ABPS, KHOR

Introduction Who doesn’t love the sound of rain, the smell of earth and the sight of bright green trees paired with blooming flowers? Of course, there are a lot of reasons to love the monsoon season—the most important one being that it indicates the end of scorching summer heat and provides some much-needed relief. However, from road accidents to power breakdowns, this wet weather can also cause quite a lot of trouble, especially if you are not prepared in advance. Therefore, if you really want to enjoy this time of the year without facing any unfortunate incidents, here are some simple yet effective safety tips for the rainy season that you must follow.

ESSENTIAL SAFETY TIPS FOR THE RAINY SEASON DON’T TOUCH ELECTRIC WIRES One of the most important safety tips for the rainy season is to stay away from electric wires—especially the ones that have either fallen from heavy rain or are, about to fall off . Since these wires tend to break during heavy rainfall, keep an eye on the electric poles in your area and alert concerned authorities if needed. Moreover, do not park your vehicle directly under power lines or next to utility poles during the monsoon season. It is also recommended to avoid ringing people’s doorbells while it’s pouring, particularly if the bell isn’t covered by some sort of shade and is exposed to water.

During a Thunderstorm If a storm is accompanied by lightning, we must take the following precautions: Do not take shelter under an isolated tree. Do not take shelter under an umbrella with a metallic end. Do not sit near a window. Open garages, storage sheds, metal sheds are not safe places to take shelter. A car or a bus is a safe place to take shelter. If you are in water, get out and go inside a building. Avoid using swimming pool in rainy season.

Some more precautions during thunderstorm and lightning If you hear thunder or see lightning, move indoors immediately. Do not touch anything metal. Do not use telephone with a cord.(Lightning could hit a phone line) Do not use electrical appliance like T.V., Computers etc. Unplug all the electronic appliances.

Safety Tips Walk carefully in waterlogged area. Wear shoes when walking to prevent insect bite. Change your clothes after reaching home to avoid fungal infection. Do not touch switches with wet hands. Avoid eating street food. Follow a healthy diet.
