Morale is a fusion of employees’ attitudes, behaviors, manifestation of views and opinions - all taken together in their work scenarios, exhibiting the employees ’ feelings towards work, working terms and relation with their employers. According to Davis, “Morale is a mental condition of groups and individuals which determines their attitude.” According to Alexander H. Leighton, "morale is the capacity of a group of people to pull together persistently and consistently in pursuit of a common purpose". Morale
High morale implies determination at work- an essential in achievement of management objectives . High morale results in: A keen teamwork on part of the employees. Organizational Commitment and a sense of belongingness in the employees mind. Immediate conflict identification and resolution. Healthy and safe work environment. Effective communication in the organization. Increase in productivity. Greater motivation. High Morale
Low morale has following features: Greater conflicts in organization . High rate of employee absenteeism and turnover. Dissatisfaction with the superiors and employers. Poor working conditions. Employees frustration. Decrease in productivity. Lack of motivation. Low Morale
1. Be clear and transparent with what you expect from them. 2. Know how they work , Don’t force the employee to change how they perform; 3 . Real-time feedback , employees now want feedback and they want it often 4. Encourage strengths , If employees are doing work they’re passionate about, the output will more likely be positive. 5. Let them take the reins , Encourage your workers to come up with their own ideas and support their creative endeavors. 6 . Offer incentives 7 . Regardless of the source of motivation, people seek outcomes. Outcome: anything a person gets from a job. Examples include pay, autonomy, accomplishment . Organizations hire workers to obtain inputs: Input : anything a person contributes to their job. Examples include skills, knowledge, work behavior . Managers thus use outcomes to motivate workers to provide inputs. Outcomes & Inputs
People are motivated to obtain outcomes at work to satisfy their needs. A need is a requirement for survival. To motivate a person: 1)Managers must determine what needs worker wants to be satisfied . 2)Ensure that a person receives the outcomes when performing well . Several needs theories exist.
