SESSION 2
THE MAIN GOAL
•The main goal is to connect all the
hardware together like hard drives,
memory modules, CPU, etc...
PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD
1. The Processor Socket
THE PROCESSOR SOCKET
•Sockets are the home for your Central
Processor Unit (CPU). Several types of
socket exist, the Pin Grid Array (PGA) and
the Land Grid Array (LGA).

2. Memory Slots
MEMORY SLOTS
•Memory slots also call memory banks are
for Random Access Memory modules
(RAM).
MEMORY SLOTS
•Many RAM types exist as:
–SDRAM, synchronous dynamic random access
memory
–DDR SDRAM, double-data-rate synchronous
dynamic random access memory
–DDR2 SDRAM, double-data-rate 2 synchronous
dynamic random access memory
–DDR3 SDRAM, double-data-rate 3 synchronous
dynamic random access memory

3. Main Power Connector
4. CPU Power Connector
Main Power Connector And
The CPU Power Connector
•The main power connector is uses to get
the electric energy from the power supply
which the motherboard require to function
properly.
•There are 2 main power connector types
for those motherboard parts. The 20 pins +
4 pins (2 separate connectors on the same
motherboard), and the 24 pins.
PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD
5. AGP Slot
6. PCIe Slot
AGP and PCIe Slot
•The motherboard parts Accelerated
Graphics Port (AGP) and Peripheral
Component Interconnect Express (PCIe)
focus on graphic cards only.
•PCIe standard is even better than AGP
standard, and mostly the only one used
right now.

7. PCI Slots
PCI SLOTS
•Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)
are used to install sound cards, graphic
cards, Ethernet cards and modems.

8. P-ATA and S-ATA Interface Connectors
P-ATA AND S-ATA INTERFACE
CONNECTORS
•The Parallel Advance Technology
Attachment (P-ATA) interface is used to
connect hard drives and optic drives. You
can attach 2 drives on the same ribbon, 1
master and the other slave, and it supports
almost all modern hard drives storage
capacities.
P-ATA AND S-ATA INTERFACE
CONNECTORS
•Modern computer mother boards have the
new interface called Serial Advance
Technology Attachment (S-ATA). It is faster
than the ATA and only 1 device can be
attached to it. The wire is thinner than his
predecessor and surely help at the cooling
process inside the computer case.

9. Floppy Drive Connector
FLOPPY DRIVE CONNECTOR
•Plug your "3.5" floppy drive there. Not
really used now, they are going to
disappear completely very soon.
PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD
10. Northbridge Chipset
NORTHBRIDGE CHIPSET
•The Northbridge typically handles
communications among the CPU, in some
cases RAM, and PCI Express (or AGP) video
cards, and the Southbridge
PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD
11. Southbridge Chipset
SOUTHBRIDGE CHIPSET
•The Southbridge typically implements the
"slower" capabilities of the motherboard in
a Northbridge/Southbridge chipset
computer architecture. In Intel chipset
systems the Southbridge is named
Input/output Controller Hub (ICH).
PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD
12. BIOS Chip
BIOS CHIP
•The basic input/output system (BIOS), also
known as the System BIOS or ROM BIOS
•The primary function of the BIOS is to set up
the hardware and load and start an operating
system. When the PC starts up, the first job
for the BIOS is to initialize and identify system
devices such as the video display card,
keyboard and mouse, hard disk drive, optical
disc drive and other hardware.
PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD
13. CMOS Battery
CMOS BATTERY
•The CMOS (Complimentary Metal-Oxide
Semiconductor) is a little bit of RAM that
stores all the BIOS information so that each
time the computer restarts or powers on,
the computer can remember this
information.
PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD
14. PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard Port
15. USB (Universal Serial Bus) Ports
16. Serial Ports or Communication Ports
17. Parallel Port or Printer/Scanner Port
18. Audio and Game Port
19. VGA (Video Graphic Accelerator) Port
20. LAN (Local Area Network) Port
