Motivation
Motivation refers to a process of inducing and stimulating an individual to act in certain manner. In the context of a Student, Motivation in the classroom is the willingness and desire of a student to learn. Motivation can be measured by four indices: choice, effort, persistence, and level of achievement. The higher these indicators are, the higher a student's motivation. “Keep going, and success will be yours”. Meaning of Motivation
According to William G. Scout, “Motivation means a process of stimulating people to action to accomplish desired goals”. According to Fred Luthans , “Motivation is the process which begins with a physiological or psychological need or deficiency which triggers behavior or a drive that is aimed at a goal or incentive .” Psychologist Abraham Maslow (1943, 1954) stated that human motivation is based on people seeking fulfillment and change through personal growth. Self- actualized people are those who were fulfilled and doing all they were capable of. Definition of Motivation by Different Authors
Motivation is a Psychological Concept Motivation affects the Whole Individual, not part of Him /Her Motivation is never an Unending Process Non- fulfilment of Basic Needs Makes a Man Sick Goals are Motivators The Self-concept as a Unifying Force Motivation is a complex phenomenon Motivation is different from Satisfaction, Inspiration, and Manipulation Characteristics of Motivation
Motivation is defined as our enthusiasm for doing something. It is the ‘why’ behind every action. Motivation is the reason – or reasons – for acting or behaving in a particular way. It helps us to set a goal and reach it. The term ‘motivation’ is derived from the Latin verb ‘ movere ’, so quite literally, it’s what keeps us moving . In education, motivation helps children and young people to focus their attention on a key goal or outcome. In doing so, they are unfazed by possible distractions, and are therefore able to maintain their attention during longer periods of time. Importance of Motivation in Education
Motivation is the force that keeps students going, even when they face barriers or challenges. It charges them with the energy required to fulfil their potential. A student who is motivated is committed, energetic, and innovative, they see the value in what they are learning, and are determined to achieve their goals. Why is Motivation in Students Important?
There are innumerable benefits of motivation in learning; Increased persistence. Increased wellbeing. Improved performance and outcomes. Enhanced cognitive processing. Increased effort in lessons. Higher levels of attendance. Increased creativity and innovation. B enefits of Motivation
Intrinsic Motivation Extrinsic Motivation Different Types of Motivation in Education?
Intrinsic motivation is a self-summoned willingness to learn. Those who are intrinsically motivated don’t require sanctions or rewards to help steer their efforts. Very young children are often naturally intrinsically motivated, and are led by their innate curiosity. This form of motivation often encourages more efficient and successful learners in the classroom. There are many studies which suggest that children who are intrinsically motivated are better at learning. Intrinsic motivation
Education providers often cultivate intrinsic motivation through extrinsic means. Vansteenkiste et al. (2006) define extrinsic motivation as the desire of people to participate in activities in order to gain something different from the task itself. Examples of extrinsic motivation include medals for the winners of a race, chocolate for good attendance, extra break time for positive behaviour , vouchers for reading for pleasure, and completing homework in order to avoid a detention. Extrinsic Motivation
Motivation pushes children to work hard and aim high in everything they set their minds to. When students are surrounded by a culture of warmth, diversity, and high expectations, they are much more likely to display positive behaviours . Children who are motivated are also more likely to find pleasure in satisfying their academic curiosity. Intrinsic motivation links strongly to performance merely for the enjoyment of engaging in activities. This pleasure is often the reason that pupils take part in academic tasks. How Does Motivation Impact Behaviour and Performance?
We know that students who are intrinsically motivated are much more likely to be successful in their education, but can extrinsic motivation help to improve performance? In a research project run by the Education Endowment Foundation, students in KS4 were offered an incentive for achieving their set GCSE targets. Participants were extrinsically motivated through either a financial reward, or access to a paid trip. Where students were offered a monetary incentive, there was a significant improvement in classwork effort seen within English, maths , and science. However, there was no evidence of a significant positive impact on attainment. Therefore, extrinsic motivation can prove to be successful in improving engagement, but as this study proves, there is limited evidence to suggest that it boosts attainment, or would help to maintain effort over a long period of time. How Motivation Affects Academic Performance
Methods To Spark Motivation In Your Students
Tracking Progress Making Activities Fun Giving Praise Changing Up The Environment Define Objectives Create A Safe Learning Environment Encourage Student Self-reflection Know Your Students Share Your Enthusiasm Help Students Determine Their Intrinsic Motivation Different Methods to Motivation
Tracking Progress If you don’t know where you’ve been, how will you know where you’re going? Tracking progress for students allows them (and you) to see how far they’ve come. You can use this to inform your teaching and as feedback to show your students their progress. Making Activities Fun Not everything has to be fun and games but students who perceive school as a place where they can have a good time will be motivated to do the work that’s required and pay attention. Adding fun activities or changing up lesson plans to be more engaging can be a great way to help students who struggle with motivation.
Giving Praise A simple but often overlooked way of rewarding students are words of encouragement. Learners crave praise and recognition for a job well done. Positive comments are free and students are noticeably motivated when teachers acknowledge their successes or even share their great work. Changing Up The Environment The classroom is a great place to learn but it isn’t the only option. Sitting at the same desk all day can start to be a bit monotonous for some students. Switch things up by getting out of the classroom either by taking a field trip or working outside. Changing the scenery will keep things new and fresh for students.
Define Objectives Without clear guidance and expectations, students can easily become frustrated and disengaged. They crave the ability to know what’s expected of them and it helps them stay motivated to complete their work. Make sure to clearly lay out objectives, rules, and various classroom expectations to remove any ambiguity or confusion for your students. Create A Safe Learning Environment Creating a safe learning environment will allow students to thrive, experiment, and take risks without feeling judged. Learners naturally attempt to fulfill expectations that have been set by their teacher – try and focus on positive reinforcement to keep students motivated and feeling safe in their learning environment.
Encourage Student Self-reflection Have your students take a look at themselves by reflecting on what they’ve done, if it was successful or not, and what they want to accomplish moving forward. Defining goals and considering achievements will empower students, making them feel like they are in charge of their learning journey. Know Your Students Students want to know their teacher cares about them. Show a genuine interest in making sure they succeed. Get to know your class by using icebreakers and other engaging activities. Your students will appreciate praise and feedback much more when they know it’s coming from someone that knows and respects them.
Share Your Enthusiasm If you’re excited, chances are your students will be too! Your energy and enthusiasm can be a great way to motivate your students. Help Students Determine Their Intrinsic Motivation Helping students be motivated is great, but to be successful long-term, it’s important for them to generate their own motivation. Assist your students in determining their own reasons for working hard and completing class work. Control can play a big role here. The more choice students have in what they’re learning about, the more likely they are to find self-motivation.
A desire to make a difference in children's lives. A teacher's motivating style toward students revolves around what teachers say and do during instruction to motivate students to engage in learning activities. Encourage contact between students and faculty. Develop reciprocity and cooperation among students. Communicate high expectations. Respect diverse talents and ways of learning. Role of Teacher in Motivation
Students who are motivated are more likely to set goals and work toward achieving those goals. Students are more likely to have higher achievement and learn more when they are motivated . Therefore, motivation provides the effort and energy that a learner needs to achieve the task. It brings the learner to the proper frame of mind for learning. It concentrates the attention and energy of a person on the activity or knowledge to be learned. Conclusion
Show passion and enthusiasm for the subject matter. Enthusiastic teachers can make learning fun and enjoyable, which can motivate students to participate and learn. Passionate teachers often use creative and innovative teaching methods to engage their students.
