INTRODUCTION WHAT IS INNOVATION?

WHY INNOVATE MINING? Mining contributes to the environmental crisis. We need mining to save the environment( the source of renewable energy equipment). Innovating mining contributes to a more environmentally conscious future(Steen, J., et al 2018) .

IMPACTS OF CURRENT MINING METHODS To create a sustainable system, we will address several systemic barriers within the mining process that contribute to social and environmental impacts. These barriers include: Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Production and Accumulation of Waste Air Pollution Land degradation (Boldy, R.,et al 2021)

PROBLEM The mining process is extremely demanding on resources such as water, land, and energy. The ecological and social degradation that results from the mining process prevents the industry from complying with the “Four System Conditions for Sustainability” as per The Natural Step. The current practices of minimizing impacts and enforcing regulations do not address the systemic sustainability challenges within the process . (Bell,S.E and York,R.,2012)

The graph provided illustrates how coal power has killed a massacre of the world’s population due to polluted air. This now convinces us clearly that a change for innovation needs to be done instantly for people’s sake.(Bell,S.E and York,R.,2012

The best practices and strategies to mitigate acid mine drainage involve extensive geochemical, biological an d hydrologic analysis that must occur during the Evaluation phase. Waterless mining methods, such as dry processing or in-situ leaching, minimize water usage .(Gunson, A.J., Klein, B., Veiga, M. and Dunbar, S., 2010. ) Implementing reclamation and rehabilitation plans to restore the land after mining operations have ceased. Use of autonomous vehicles to reduce diesel emission. Addressing Barriers

CONCLUSION We need mining to save the world from environment crisis ,so it is significant that we collaborate into rebuilding and rebranding the mining industry. We mining engineers believe sustainability can be a catalyst to these changes as it addresses all facets of the mining value chain, from input sourcing and development of local supply and renewable energy to delivering a sustainable product to the market
