Multiplying and dividing
algebraic expressions
involves applying the
rules of arithmetic to
variables and coefficients.
1.Using distributive
property
2.Multiplying
monomials
3.Multiplying
polynomials using
FOIL method

•When multiplying monomials we simply
multiply the coefficients first and then add the
exponents with the same base (variable).
Example: 2 x 4a = 8a Note that since only one variable was given
so there is not need to add exponents of variables.
Example # 2: -3b x 2b = -6b² In this case variable b is found
in both terms so the exponents, which is 1, were added.
Example # 3: 4r x 5s = 20rs In this example the variables
are not like terms so you simply multiply the two variables together.

Using distributive propertyUsing distributive property
When multiplying a term by a polynomial,
distribute the term to each term in the
polynomial.

Dividing MonomialsDividing Monomials
•Dividing monomials refers to the division of
coefficients of the two given monomials and
division of the variables separately and then
combining them to get the result.
Example # 1: 10m = 5m
2
Example # 2: 25y = -5
-5y (Coefficient were divided
first, then the exponents were subtracted y¹ - y¹ = y
(1-1)
= y⁰ = 1)
