The white and blocky masthead is the
most obvious and eye catching
feature of this magazine cover
however instead of using their red,
distinctive masthead that they are
known for using they have subverted
this by us8ing a white one and this
may indicate that this magazine is a
special edition.
This cover is unique and different as
it captures the artists unique style
and persona
There is no barcode
on the front cover
that is apparent
Anchoring text. Usually
there is anchoring text
which is typically a
picture of someone
along with their name.
The use of cover lines for this
magazine are included only
on the left side of the
magazine in order to not
distract the audience from
the unique image of the
artist. The language is simple
which catches the readers
attention and the coverlines
are mainly in white to attract
The image of the artist
which creates a mysterious
effect due to the use of
chiaroscuro lighting.
Strapline included
The images features a
musician playing an
instrument and a concert
which is conventional to
what you would expect
them to be doing. This also
demonstrates an
involvement with politics
with the president featured
in one of these contents
images. This could be
classed as unconventional.
There is a contents menu
and headings are used to
organise them.
The sub-headings are
more specific and provide
a lot more information.
Capital letters indicate
importance and make the
contents stand out , making
information to be more
clear.
Page Numbers are featured in
the contents menu in order to
navigate through the magazine.
There is a consistent
house style. The red
and black contrast well
witheach other and is
consistent throughout
the cover. The red is
also consistent with
the front cover.
National affairs segment
which may indicate to an
older magazine than
perhaps the likes of Music
Week or NME. This may
also be seen as
unconventional as we don't
typically see this in a music
magazine.
Main feature articles are
presented in a bold and
black font to draw
attention to them.
To an extent, it could be said
that perhaps this music
magazine is unconventional
as most music magazines
with an older demographic
are less formal than this
one.
Page guidance which links to
the numbers on the contents
menu.
Features a range of articles
which link to either music
artists or their life. E.g. gossip or
their lifestyle
The masthead in a bright red colours
which has an immediate effect of
catching the eye of the reader
Issue number, date and price
These are the sell lines of a magazine, they tell
readers about other articles in the
magazines that are interesting. There purpose is
to catch the eye of the reader and are usually
placed on the bottom
or on the side of a magazine.
The main headline is obviously
about the artist that is featured on
the front cover.
There is no barcode present
on the front cover in order
to not cause disruption to
the main point of the
magazine.
The magazine is kept clean
and simplistic
The title is written in
white inside the red
banner to make it
stand out.
The colours of the contents page fit
into the general theme of the whole
magazine. The colours for Rolling
Stone are black ,white and red and this
theme carries on throughout the
magazine in order to make it pleasing
to the eye. As the colours contrast well
it makes it helps to prevent the
magazine from looking too messy and
uneasy to read.
There are page numbers in order to
guide readers to where this image
leads to incase they wanted to find
out more information. These are in
white to stand out against the
images so it is clear to read.
The images contain photos of featured artists
are included down the side to engage the
reader into reading the artists included.
The contents page includes a section which
explains who the model is on the front cover.
Usually it will be a famous artist and there will be a
full featured article on the inside.
The different news articles are separated so that
the audience can go straight to the article that they
particularly would like to read about.
Titles of the articles are written in bold so that
they stand out and it is the first thing that the
reader sees.
Includes news articles so that not all of
them are music related. Rolling stone
magazine usually include stories about
politics and current events which attracts
a larger demographic
Masthead is bold an eye
catching and the F is
highlighted in a similar colour
to the colour of her top.
The main headline matches the
masthead and is bold and simple .
However, the headline provides
minimal information on the
contents of the contents of the
magazine. The lack of contents it
intrigues the target audience making
them want to read the magazine
because of the mystery.
Lack of barcode again which
adds to the simplicity and
because it is purchased online.
The main image is very simplistic and the
lighting showcases the artist in a softer
way instead of a harsher way.
The tagline makes it
clear that the
magazine is a
special edition
Her main facial features are framed in the
centreby using the rule of thirds
The colourscheme of this
contents page is black and white
which is conventional for Fader.
This scheme creates a strong
feeling of 'no distractions' which
completes the the simplicity of
the magazine which then attracts
a younger demographic for an
audience.
There is only one image used
which is yet again very typical
of Fader. This mid landscape
photo of the model creates
an enigma with her sun
glasseswhich makes it
unclear who she is.
The text and font is
quite simplistic and
small ,using a light
serif font, which
subverts the codes
and conventions
Subheadings are used but in
a heavier blocks to make it
more clear to the audience
The layout of this magazine stood
out to me as it is very
minimilisticwhich is very unique.
The masthead is as usual .
It is in a large bold font in
order to stand out and
appear as dominant.
The placement of the
date, issue number is
unusual as it is below the
masthead instead of
being above the
masthead
There are no headlines and there
is only the name of the celebrity
and this is placed in the centre
of the foreground.
The producers have decided
to use high key lighting,
making the artist look
angelic and simplistic but
also quite extra.
Lack of barcode again
whichadds to the
simplicity andbecause it
is purchased online.
Date, issue
number of the
magazine
Using lines helps organise the main
picture, which is rare for a music
magazine like this. It makes the
magazine stand out and keeps its
simple style strong.
Issue number stands out in bold and large font
on the contents page, making It easy to see
which issue readers have. This shows the
magazine is well organised, appealing to the
target audience who value professionalism.
The lines through the number give a sense of
speed, reflecting the magazines determination
to convey its message quickly.
The page numbers and article titles are in a
small font, not drawing much attention. This
puts more focus on the magazine's aesthetic
features. However, the font used isnt very
fancy, which is unusual for most hip-hop
music magazines. This uniqueness intrigues
readers.
Only colour palette used is
black and white which
creates a sophisticated look.
Right hand side of
magazine in order for
the layout to look more
structured.
Uses the convention of using a
white dominate masthead in the
top left corner. The masthead is
in bold letters which creates the
sense that the magazine is
dominating, which will also
attract consumers.
This magazine has a barcode in the bottom right
corner in order to not distract readers from the
main image.
There is a tagline on this
magazine edition
A pull quote is in white
and in a bold font in order
to hook readers and make
them engage with the
magazine. I have not yet
seen this. This teaser
matches the image of the
artist.
Price and issue number.
The colour scheme
matches the on going
firey theme which may
tell us about what the
artist is like.
The puff is placed in the bottom right
corner but still remains obvious,
attracting readers but also not
distracting the readers from the
main image and the other cover
lines.
"rare and revealing" almost
teases the audience and may
make them more engagedwith
the magazine.
The anchorage text also reveals
the artists personality.
There are bold numbers in
order toindicate where
audiences can access
There is a date on the top of the contents
page which is conventional.
There is a busy atmosphere
to this edition which I have
not yet seen. This is due to
the large images
Pulled quotes in order to tease the
audience and also to let them know
what type of content will be
throughout the magazine
There is some extra information in a plus
section which has extra articles and page
information
Extra information
underneath the
quotes
This magazine has a barcode in
the bottom rightcornerin order
tonot distract readers from
themain image just as the last
cover.
Price and issue number.
The masthead is red instead
of white to match the edition.
Tagline
Clear that this is a special
edition making it appear to be
exclusive.
There aren't really any cover
lines which may be because
this is a special edition.
There is a list feature
instead of actual
coverlines on this cover
which is not usually used
but yet again this may be
because it is a special
edition cover. These names
are the other artists who
are featured on the special
edition covers.
A teaser quote from an
interview which may
come across as shady or
seen as drama which
intices readers.
Name of the artist in bold as
usual
The main image is placed at the right-of-
centre of the page, displaying the cover
band clearly, showing lead singer Alex
Turner, to show the reader clearly where
the article concerning the band is placed
In the left third there is an advert section
for the magazine subscription, including
information on how to do so, displaying an
examples of a previous copy.
The text and font used is bold and bright in
contrast to the above article, making this
aspect stand out. Also the use of colour
gives the page more vibrancy and detail for
and is appealing for the viewer.
The contents listing consists of: News, Radar (detailing new
bands), Reviews, Live (live gigs) and Features section,
detailing the regular aspects of the magazine, that will
entice the NME target audience. The headers of these lists
are black blocks underneath white text, this lends the font
an embossed effect, giving it prominence on the page and
drawing in the reader. The text also descends as each piece
of information is quoted below and this layout helps the
reader to find particular parts of the magazine. Small
details such as the black arrows pointing to the contents
list, help the reader to navigate around magazine.
The contents page of NME uses an unconventional layout, with
features on different levels across the page. This particular
example gives its list of features on the right-hand side, with the
main feature taking precident at left ofcentre on the page. There
is little variation in colour, other than that of the NME logo which
lines the top of the page, adjacent to the word 'Contents', in white.
This draws the reader's attention as it is bold and simple, and
carries the colour scheme of the magazine as a whole - red, white
and black - with it. /// The date of the issue can be seen at the top
of the page within the header, continuing the colour scheme.
