2. Indonesians have a very rich form of music and functioning in varied means of their lives. Their music is one of the most ancient in Asia and is divided into two parts: the JAVANESE and the BALINESE music.

What is GAMELAN? is the Indonesians' most popular and well-known form of music. it is their traditional orchestra. it is the largest and most varied gong ensemble. in javanese, the word gamelan came from gamel which means hammer in balinese. the word gamelan came from gambeli which means to play musically.

5. What are the characteristics of gamelan music? IN JAVA , their music usually used for court ceremonies IN JAVA , it is more on percussion instruments that produce solemn characteristics. IN BALI , their music used for sacred music. IN BALI, their percussion instruments are more on metallophones and gongs. ex. CYMBALS that producing very brilliant sounds with a variety of expressive music elements.

6. Major functions of Gamelan to accompany songs, dances and shadow plays. it is usually performed in courts and temples during rituals and festivities.
