The Chrysanthemums is a short story written by John Steinbeck. The story was
originally published in 1937 before later being released as a part of his The Long
Valley collection. This is an important story as it expresses women in a way that is
more realistic, showing their true boredom, ambition, and capabilities. Some scholars
interpreted this story differently, but C. Kenneth Pellow interprets it as radically
feministic. The Great Depression was finally ending and women s rights were rising

In the poems Frederick Douglass by Robert Hayden and I, Too, Sing America by
Langston Hughes, both authors engage in the common themes of race, oppression,
and freedom, but Hayden contextualizes the theme in a wider mindset instead of
narrowing it down to just black oppression, while Langston contextualizes the theme
with a direct approach to black oppression and freedom. Not only are the approaches
to the topic different, but they also relate through the messages that they are
conveying about freedom. Both authors way of engaging with the themes alters and
enrich the understanding of the issues at hand. They broaden the reader s scope on
race, prejudice, and freedom while informing the reader that it will take time.
Robert Hayden approaches the poem Frederick Douglass without using any direct
link to black oppression and freedom other than the famous figure Frederick
Douglass himself. This poem was written in 1966, and in that year several things
were happening in the United States with race relations. In 1966 the black power

Michel Foucault s concepts of biopower and biopolitics , to express the way in

Mortification of the self is a process in which a person may be degraded or striped
of their identity, willingly or unwillingly, for multiple different reasons. This process
can also happen unconsciously or consciously. In his essay, The Social Situation of
Mental Patients and Other Inmates , Goffman explains five main categories of these
types of institutes that may use mortification of the self for their benefit or the
communities benefit. In this essay, I will be discussing in more depth how prisons
use the mortification of the self on their prisoners and how, in a way, colleges and the
NCAA use mortification processes as well to shape their students and athletes.
The first institute is for those that are incapable and harmless. For example, those
who are blind, aged, or orphaned may be admitted to this type of institute. This
institution may be thought of as a positive environment, and the mortification of the
self a good thing for both those in control as well as those at the institute. The second
is for those that are incapable, but may be harmful in the community. This can include
a mental hospital and a leprosaria, so the community as well as the inmates would

attained a degree of parity in terms of the quantity of depictions in television and
movie time, the quality of their onscreen personas are more or less based on societal

of Bethany, a man brought back to life by Christ as a demonstration of his divine

In the awe inspiring novel Life of Pi, the author Yann Martel uses the color orange
to symbolize survival and hope. Soon after the sinking of the ship, Pi expresses the
significance of this color as it appears all throughout the lifeboat. He observantly
states in his narration, ..the tarpaulin and the life jackets and the lifebuoy and the
oars and most every ther significant object aboard was orange. (Martel 138) Through
this quote, the author establishes it as an indisputable fact that orange displays

When you think of an athlete, who do you think of, Archie Griffin? Do you think
about Olympians such as Lindsey Vonn? The media makes us think that whenever
we think of athletics, we imagine large sport complexes and people running about
and playing games we call sports. But, where do we get this definition? Why do we
think this way, who has set the precedent that athletes are purely physical? Is this just
a stereotype that needs to be broken?
Webster s American Dictionary defines an Athlete as a person who is trained or
skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina.
The word originates from Middle English, from the Latin word athleta, which
further is from Greek athlД“tД“s from athlein to contend for a prize, from Athlon
prize, contest. So basically, the word originates as someone who competes for a
prize, but the word has evolved to generally mean someone who does it in activities
requiring physical strength. However, why is this the way it is? Why is someone
who trains and competes in a math tournament, commonly referred to as a mathlete ,
not a true athlete, by definition?
A good way to approach this issue is to talk about what an athlete is not, before

Abstract
The aim of this study was to test the rate of reactivity of the enzyme catalase on
hydrogen peroxide while subject to different concentrations of an inhibitor. The
hypothesis was that hydrogen peroxide will be broken down by catalase into
hydrogen and oxygen, where a higher concentration of inhibitor will yield less
oxygen, resultant of a lower rate of reaction. Crushed potato samples of equal weight
were placed in hydrogen peroxide solutions of various temperatures. The results
showed that less gas was produced as the concentration of the inhibitor rose. This Is
because more enzymes were inhibited, and so less active sites were available for
reaction.

Planning I will be studying the rate of catalase activity on hydrogen peroxide while
varying the amount of inhibition, which should influence the rate of the reaction, and
thus the amount of oxygen, observed in a given time. The concentration of the
inhibitor will therefore be the independent variable, while the amount of oxygen will
be the dependent variable. There should a smaller volume of oxygen observed as the
concentration of the enzyme increases. As I am comparing two variables to each
other, it would be wise to calculate the correlation of the two variables. To calculate
the correlation, I should use Spearman s rank correlation coefficient. To find a
suitable correlation, I should use at least 8 samples. After plotting a scattergraph, I
will proceed to find out the correlation if the correlation looks reasonable enough.
Variables Temperature: Temperature is an extremely important variable to consider,
as it can affect the rate of reaction in a number of ways. If the temperature of a
system is increased, more molecules will reach the activation energy and the rate of
reaction will increase. The number of collisions will also increase. As enzymes must
collide with substrates, an increase in temperature and thus kinetic energy will result
in more collisions occurring in a given time. Increasing the temperature will also
increase the heat of the molecules.
