5 stages of nail growth 1. Cell mitosis takes place at the matrix 2. New cells pushed forward by constant cell reproduction 3. Cells undergo hardening/keratinisation 4. Growing nail is guided along nail grooves/side wall 5. Free edge forms at the distal part of the finger
Factors affecting nail growth
Diet A well-balanced diet encourages the growth of the nails, as it is full of vitamins and nutrients such as iron and calcium, which give the nail strength. A diet which is poor in nutritional value, will cause nails to grow at a slower rate and becomes weakened, and produces flaky, brittle or ridge nails.
Age Growth slows down with age due to the blood circulation being less effective eg hardening of arteries; hormone levels reduce which affect nail growth also. A young person will have a better blood circulation and a higher level of hormones, which will encourage nail growth.
Genetics Nail growth is also inherited. Some people have strong, healthy, fast-growing nails whilst others will have a predisposition for weakness.
Climate A hot or warm climate stimulates the blood circulation to feed the cells encouraging nail growth. Nails always grow faster in the summer than winter months.
Day or Night Nails grow quicker during the day than at night.
Medication Medications can affect the nail growth usually slowing it down.
Infections Infectious conditions such as measles and mumps affect the nail growth slowing it down and leaving nail plate affected by thinning, ridging, pitting, or thickening.
