What is Narrative Inquiry Research Design The term narrative comes from the verb “to narrate” or “to tell (as a story) in detail” (Ehrlich, Flexner, Carruth, & Hawkins, 1980, p. 442). In narrative research designs, researchers describe the lives of individuals, collect and tell stories about people’s lives, and write narratives of individual experiences ( Connelly & Clandinin , 1990 ). 1

When to Use Narrative Inquiry Research Design When we have individuals willing to tell their stories and we want to report their stories. For educators who are looking for personal experiences in actual school settings When the stories told to us follow a chronology of events 2

Types of Narrative Research Design Autobiographies Biographies • Oral histories Biographies Life writing • Ethnohistories Personal accounts • Autoethnographies Personal narratives • Ethnopsychologies Narrative interviews • Person- centered ethnographies Personal documents • Popular memories Documents of life • Latin American testimonios Life stories and life histories • Polish memoir 3

Strengths of Narrative Inquiry Research Design Reveal in depth detail of a situation or life experience Can reveal historically significant issues. A way to democratize the documentation and lived experience of a wider gamut of society. In the past only the rich could afford a biographer to have their life experience recorded, narrative research gave voice to marginalized people and their experience.

Key Characteristics There are 7 major characteristics that are central to narrative research, which are: Individual experiences social and personal interactions Chronology of the experiences past, present, and future experiences Collecting individual stories first-person, oral accounts of actions obtained through field texts (data) 4

Key Characteristics 4. Re-storying gathers stories, analyzes them for key elements of the story 5. Coding for themes code the data of the stories into themes or categories 6. Context or setting describe in detail the setting or context 7. Collaborating with participants actively involves the participant 4

Steps in Conducting Narrative Inquiry Research Design 5

Potential Ethical Issues The participant may “fake the data” ( Connelly & Clandinin , 1990 , p. 10) Participants may not be able to tell the real story. Issue of who owns the story (Ownership 6
