with summer temperatures reaching as
5 high as 47°C.

* Therefore, the major concern in the
region with respect to building design
is summer cooling, at the same time
winters are also quite harsh requiring
heating during the winter months.

+ The Solar Energy Centre
was completed in 1991 but
most of the facilities have
been put to use at a much

later stage.

SOLAR ENERGY CENTER, GURGAON , HARYANA

The Institute was set up with
a view to encourage research
in the field of solar
technology as a viable
alternate energy system.

At the same time the centre itself

is built taking into account
principles of passive solar
design to reduce energy
consumption in the building.

GRIHA criteia 3 : DESIGN TO MITIGATE UHIE is followed

This is achieved by

reducing heat gain in summer,
encouraging effective ventilation,
natural cooling

- effective insulation

.

to prevent heat loss
duringthe winter

The Solar Energy Centre building is
designed to reflect the principles of
energy conservation and application of
solar heating and cooling concepts.

exterior and is mainly oriented at an angle of
20 degrees east of south.

-Earth shelter is the main cooling system and
the guest house is partially sunk into the
ground .

-The roof has a terrace garden , which is
watered during summers facilitating
evaporative cooling . A special section is used
fo ensure cross ventilation of cach guest

- Windows are provided with an arched
sunshade , which allows winter sun to
come in through the top of the glazing .
The windows are designed to reduce

SUSTAINABLE FEATURES

1. Special openable louvered shutters were designed for the eat and west

facing windows.

2. Aluminium windows were used in preference to steel windows as this
gives tighter fitting with lesser infiltration.

3. To provide day lighting in all the work areas and to ensure that no
artificial lights are being used during day time, all the deeper office rooms
have been provided with windows on two different sides.

4. The windows have been properly shaded to reduce glare from the sky.

does not work during this period. In these buildings, cross ventilation has
been provided in all rooms.

One advantage of the RSEC system is that it cools in a healthy manner as it
does not humidify the ambient air of the room.

On the other hand if a DESERT COOLER were to be used, it would pump moist
air inside the room and increase the humidity, which would cause discomfort
and affect the health of occupants.

The composition of
the centre comes
across as very
homogeneous even
at the risk of
becoming too
monotonous, due to
the compact nature
of planning and the
repetitive use of
typical arched

recessed windows. \

The buildings ar
painted in ligh

relieved by the use
of darker colors to
break the monotony.

Y For comfort during the milder months of
summer, cross-ventilation is provided in all
rooms.

provide ventilation and vicw, and some day-
lighting close to the window. The
windows ensure day-lighting deep inside the

Active systems like solar water heating arc also cmployed with solar water
heaters provided in each toilet, integrated with the design.

Back-up electric heaters are provided in individual toilets rather than as a
heating element in the water storage tank itself as it is quite wasteful.

The system has, however been modified now duc to maintenance problems.

A sunny terrace for solar cooking has also been provided near the kitchen.

At the same time toilets have been placed in visible location to facilitate

LANDSCAPING
FEATURES

+ » Landscaping is an important
element in altering the
microclimate of a place.

» Proper landscaping reduces direct
sun from striking and heafing up
of building surfaces.

a ce era EH ez

» It prevents le light carrying heat into a building from the ground
or other surfaces.

» Landscaping creates different airflow patterns and can be used to direct
or divert the wind advantageously by causing a pressure difference.

» Additionally, the shade created by trees and the effect of grass and shrubs
reduce air temperatures adjoining the building and provide evaporative

cooling.
