Introduction 01 What is national sports day?

NATIONAL SPORTS DAY in India is celebrated on 29 th August of every year. National sports day is also known as ‘ Rashtriya Khel Divas’. NATIONAL SPORTS DAY Sports a word which brings smile to your face and immunity to your body system is celebrated as national sports day in India

First national sports day Why 29 th August?   The first National Sports Day celebrated in India t he first time in 2012. It is observed on 29 August every year to commemorate the birthday of Indian hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. Some facts to know!!!

Dhyan Chand Singh joined the army at an early age and learned the game of hockey from his coach Pankaj Gupta. He quickly picked up the technique of ball dribbling which led him to became the captain of the Indian Hockey team. Due to his extraordinary skills, he was named as 'Chand'. During his sports career, he has won 3 Olympic medals and till date, he remains the only hockey player who has won Padma Bhushan award. His lifetime awards and achievements in sports are considered as the highest point in the history of Indian sports. That’s why 29 th August was chosen to be the National sports day.

Major Dhyan Chand 03 Let us learn more about the legend………..

Major   Dhyan Chand  (29 August 1905 – 3 December 1979) was an Indian  field hockey  player widely regarded as one of the greatest in the history of the sport .  He was known for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats, in addition to earning three  Olympic gold medals , in 1928, 1932 and 1936, during an era where India dominated field hockey. His influence extended beyond these victories, as India won the field hockey event in seven out of eight Olympics from 1928 to 1964 . Major  Dhyan Chand

Known as  The Wizard  or  The Magician of hockey  for his superb ball control, Chand played internationally from 1926 to 1949; he scored 570 goals in 185 matches according to his autobiography,  Goal .The   Government of India  awarded Chand India's third highest civilian honour of  Padma Bhushan  in 1956.His birthday, 29 August, is celebrated as  National Sports Day  in India every year. Dhyan Chand remains a legendary figure in Indian and world hockey. Chand's birthday, 29 August, is celebrated as  National Sports Day  in India. The  President  gives away sport-related awards such as the  Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna ,   Arjuna Award  and  Dronacharya Award  on this day at the  Rashtrapati Bhavan , India. The 20th National Award 2012, the Gem of India, awarded by the Union Minister of India, was given to Dhyan Chand. The award was received by Dhyan Chand’s son, Ashok Dhyan Chand (a hockey Olympian in his own right) on behalf of his deceased father. India's highest award for lifetime achievement in sports is the  Dhyan Chand Award  which has been awarded annually from 2002 to sporting figures who not only contribute through their performance but also contribute to the sport after their retirement. 4. A hostel at  Aligarh Muslim University , of which he was an alumnus , has been named after him. 5. He scored over 400 goals in his career , from 1926 to 1948. 6. An  Astroturf  hockey pitch , at the Indian Gymkhana Club in London, has been named after Indian hockey legend Dhyan Chand . 7. Government of India has issued a commemorative postage stamp and a First Day Cover in honour of Dhyan Chand . He remains the only Indian hockey player to have a stamp in his honour. 8. Dhyan Chand was among the nominees considered for India's highest civilian award,   Bharat Ratna , for 2014 and there was support for it. The award was then given to  Sachin Tendulkar  and  C. N. R. Rao .”

Sports in India  refers to the large variety of games played in  India , ranging from tribal games to more mainstream sports such as  field hockey ,  kabaddi ,  cricket ,  badminton  and  football . India's diversity of culture, people, and tribes, as well as its  colonial legacy , are reflected in the wide variety of sporting disciplines in the country. India won many matches and seasons of  Kabaddi at the Asian Games  and all three seasons of  Kabaddi World Cup (Standard style) . Cricket is the most popular sport in India, the country has hosted and won the  Cricket World Cup  on multiple occasions.  Field hockey  is the most successful sport for India at the  Olympic Games ; the  Indian men's team  have won eight  Olympic gold medals . Other popular sports in India are badminton, football ,   shooting wrestling ,   boxing ,   tennis ,   squash ,  weightlifting ,  gymnastics ,  athletics ,  table tennis ,   basketball ,   volleyball  and  cycling . Olympics A single athlete,  Norman Pritchard , represented India in the  1900 Olympics , winning two silver medals. India sent its first  national team to the Olympics in 1920 , and has participated in every  Summer Olympic Games  ever since. India has also competed at several  Winter Olympic Games  since 1964. As of 2021, India has won a total of 35 Summer Olympic medals. India won its first gold medal in men's  field hockey  in the  1928 Olympic Games . On winning the  10m air rifle event  at the  2008 Olympics ,  Abhinav Bindra  became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games, and India's first gold medal since  1980 , when the  men's field hockey team  had won the gold . Commonwealth Games Tennis player  Sania Mirza  has won multiple medals, including in various  Grand Slam  events, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. India has competed in all but four editions of the  Commonwealth Games , starting at the  second Games in 1934 . India has hosted the Games once, in  2010  at  Delhi . AWARDS IN INDIA The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna  is India's highest award for achievement in sports .  It recognises "the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson". As of 2018, the award comprises a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of ₹7.5 lakh (US$11,000 ). The  Dronacharya Award is awarded for excellence in coaching. It honours coaches "who have done outstanding and meritorious work on a consistent basis", and is meant to motivate them towards "raising the standard of sportspersons". As of 2017, the award comprises a bronze statuette of  Dronacharya , a certificate, ceremonial dress, and a cash prize of ₹5 lakh (US$7,200 ).

India has several sports universities in which  Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University  was the first and  Punjab Sports University  and  Sports University of Haryana  are the latest. Additionally, there are some colleges and universities dedicated entirely to sports. India's ten leading sports colleges are: Guru Gobind Singh Sports College, Lucknow  With its list of notable alumni, this residential sports college is deemed one of the best in the country. Located in Guramba , Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, this college trains its students in football, hockey, athletics, badminton, swimming, and kabaddi. Cricketers Suresh Raina and R P Singh, hockey player Jagbir Singh, runner Indrajeet Patel are some of the famous alumni of this college. Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala  Commonly known as National Institute of Sports (NIS), this is the academic wing of Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Asia's largest sports institute. Located in Patiala, this government college is affiliated to Punjabi University and Baba Farid University of Health Sciences. Housed in Old Motion Bagh Palace, this institute spreads over 286 acres and offers facilities for many sports including wrestling, judo, golf, archery, wushu and football . Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, Trivandrum  Another college that is part of the academic wing of SAI, this is located in Karivattom in the district of Trivandrum, Kerala. This college was established under the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports understand the Government of India. Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE)  Established under Government of India sponsorship, this is a deemed University dedicated to promoting sports and physical education. It is located on the Agra-Mumbai Highway at Shakthinagar , Gwalior. The college was instituted in memory of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and an equestrian statue of Rani of Jhansi adorns the campus. Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University (TNPESU)  The first university established exclusively for physical education in the country, it is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and is under the chancellery of the governor of the state. Amity School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Noida  Affiliated to the Amity University, this college offers courses for teacher trainees in  physical education. Chandrasekhar Agashe College of Physical Education, Pune  The college, affiliated to the Savithribai Phule Pune University, provides teacher training in physical education. The students are chosen through an entrance test which involves a written test, fitness tests and an interview. College of Physical Education, Pune  A unit of the Bharathi Vidyapeeth Deemed University, this college offers a bachelor's degree in teacher training. It is a self-financing institution which has been accredited by NAAC – grade A .
