Today, hand embroidery is still valued for it’s artistry and many people enjoy it as a hobby. What Is Embroidery? Embroidery is a way of decorating fabric using needle and thread. Originally this was all done by hand, but now machines can be used. Historically, embroidery had many uses, from patching and mending clothing, to making clothing look more elaborate. Over time, embroidery became a form of art and cultures all over the world used it in creating wall, table and clothing decorations. There are many techniques used to show colour and texture in embroidery. Photo courtesy of Ekabhishek (@flickr.com) - granted under creative commons licence – attribution

Do now task: RECALL Our core learning is to… To create a range of stitch techniques. Date:1 4 /09/23 Silent Independent Green Pen Recall: What were the names of the three stitches we practiced last lesson?

Creating Stitch Samples Follow the teachers demonstration to create each of these stitches: Running stitch Seed stitch Back stitch French Knot Cross stitch

Use Your Sketches Looking at your sketches from last lesson, create a ‘zoomed’ image. Draw this in your sketchbook – try to think about the stitches you have practised that could create texture and colour that links to your drawings. Once you have created and annotated your sketch, you should try to translate it into a stitched piece of art.

Early Finisher Activity: Write an Artist Statement Use the questions below to help you to write a statement about your final stitched art piece. Use full sentences. What does your p iece show? What emotions are you trying to get across? How have you tried to portray this? Do you have a style that is unique to you? What stitch techniques have you used? How do viewers feel when they look at your work? How do they know it is yours? How did you feel when creating this work and how do you feel about the work now? What would you change in the future?

Plenary: 5:5:1 Summarise the lesson in five sentences. Reduce that to five words. Now choose one word as your final word and explain why. Pause for Thought Think about the achievement and areas for improvement in Your art pieces.
