NATURE OF SOCIOLOGY Prepared by Abhijith vc Rool no- 02 Batch C1 Emch

What is Sociology ? According to L F Ward “Sociology is the science of society or social Phenomena

Nature of Sociology 1. Sociology is an independent science: Sociology is not treated and studies as a branch of any other science like philosophy, political science, or history. 2. Sociology is a social science and not a physical science : Considered as a social science that focuses on man, his social behavior , social activities, and social life. It is distinguished from astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematics, etc.
3. Sociology is the categorical and not a normative discipline : Categorical focuses on what is, not what should be or ought to be. Sociology is value-free. 4. Sociology is the pure science and not an applied science : As pure science in nature deals with the acquisition of knowledge about human society.
5. Sociology is relatively an abstract science and not a concrete science : It is related to human events and patterns. It does not restrict itself to the study of any particular society or social organization, social group, marriage, religion, family, etc.
6. Sociology is the generalizing and not a particularizing or individualizing Science : It tries to find out the general laws or principles about human interaction and association. It tries to make generalizations based on the study of some selected events and conclude all the principles in general, not on individuals. 7. Sociology is general science, not a particular science : It deals with human interaction and human life in general. The areas of inquiry of sociology are general. It only studies human activities in a general way.
8. Sociology is both rational and empirical science : There are two approaches to scientific knowledge rationalism and empiricism. Empiricism emphasis on experience and the facts that result from observation and experimentation, and rationalism emphasis the logical interferences.
