Introduction Definition of Nutraceuticals Coined by Dr. Stephen DeFelice (1989) Combination of “Nutrition” + “Pharmaceutical” Importance: Preventive and therapeutic health benefits Product which are used to provide nutrition and are also used as medicine. Available in variety of sources like herbal products, dietary suppliments , specific diets, and processed food like cereals, soups etc. Contains variety of bio-active compounds - phytochemicals, fatty acids, amino acids etc. Nutraceuticals are gaining attention due to potential nutrition, safety, and therapeutic effects.

Nutraceutical can be defined as “ A food or part of food or nutrient, that provides health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of a disease.”

Probiotic – food that contains live organisms which are beneficial to human health. Eg– variety of dairy products backery products, dietary suppliments . Prebiotics- are non-viable food components that can improve health by modulating gut microflora. Fortified nutraceuticals – when additional micro nutrients or vitamins added in fruit juice or milk to improve their value. Recombinant nutraceuticals – these products are produced by both genetic recombination and bio-technology.. Eg- gold kiwi fruit, golden rice etc.

Probabale mode of action – Acts as rasayan - due to its Bruhan guna as it nourishes the body and Balya guna provides the stamina . It contains flavonoids, alkaloids tannin, saponin, and phenol. It is having antioxidant effect on body. Research update - kushmand avaleha is a complete care and effective medication for various respiratory disorders. In Clinical trial – it was found effective in weight gain of children.

Pediatric health – Prenana Modak प्रियल-मज्ज मधुक-लाजासितोपलैः । अपतनस्य संयोज्यः प्रीणनो मोदकः शिशो ॥ - Ast. Hri. Utt. 1/38 Content = Priyala- Majja , Madhuyasti , Laja, Sita (ref- ast hrid ) Probable mode of action – Lajja has Tarpana property Madhuyasti is having Medhya property Priayal is having Balya property. So modak acts as Tarpaniya , Medhya and Balya for children.

Research update= as a lehana in infant with malnutrition shows that it has a significant effect on growth and development of infant.

Geriatric Health - Chavanprash Avaleha कासश्वासहरश्चैव विशेषेणोपदिश्यते । क्षीणक्षतानां वृद्धानां बालानां चाङ्गवर्धनः ॥ स्वरक्षयमुरोरोगं हृद्रोगं वातशोणितम् । पिपासां मूत्रशुक्रस्थान् दोषांश्चाप्यकर्षति ॥ अस्य मात्रां प्रयुञ्जीता योपरुन्ध्यान्न भोजनम् । अस्य प्रयोगाच्च्यवनः सुवृद्धोऽभूत् पुनर्युवा ॥ मेधां स्मृतिं कान्तिमनामयत्वामायुःप्रकर्षं बलमिन्द्रियाणाम् । स्त्रीषु प्रहर्ष परमग्निवृद्धिं वर्णप्रसादं पवनानुलोम्यम् ॥ रसायनस्यास्य नरः प्रयोगाल्लभेत जीर्णोऽपि कुटीप्रवेशात् । सर्वं बिभर्ति रूपं नवयौवनस्य ॥ जराकृतं रुपमपास्य सर्वं बिभर्ति रूपं नवयौवनस्य ॥ (चरकसंहिता, चिकित्सास्थान 1/62-74)

Probable mode of action – Vit. C is required for normal physiological functions like collagen formation , which provides supportive matrix for the blood vessels and connective tissues and for bones and cartilages . It plays important role in wound healing and maintenance of healthy gums . Sodium is essential for cellular homeostasis and physiological functions. It is found in all the body fluids. Its role is important in maintaining ECF volume because of its main osmotic action and is equally important for excitability of muscle and nerve cells and for the transportation of nutrients and substrate through plasma membrane. Intracellular and extracellular oxidative stress causes skin aging; use of antioxidant s is an effective approach to prevent its symptoms.

Alkaloids, Amino acids, Fixed oils and fats, Saponins, Glycosides, Phenolic, Phytosterol, Flavonoids from other herbs present in Chavanprash may play important role in Prevention Of Diseases And Maintenance Of Normal Physiology Ingredients of Chavanprash such as Nagkeshar , patrak , Ela , Twak , Patla , Gambhari , Bilva , Agru , Shalparni , Pushkarmul , Nagarmotha , Kaknasa , Vidarikanda , helps in correcting digestive system . These herbs may helpful in gastritis, peptic ulcer and intestinal cramping. Pippali , Kantakari , Bhumyamalaki , Shrungi , Vasa , Pushkarmul , Prishnparni , Arni , Shalparni , Til Oil , and Amala helps in nourishing the respiratory system . Probable mofe of action – Main indication of Phala Ghrita is in Vandhyata,It is Vata dominance Roga . Ghrita is Tridoshaghana and other ingredients of this formulation are having Tikta , Madhura and Katu Rasa, Katu and Madhura Vipaka . Due to these properties its acts in Vandhayata and Shukra Dosha. .

Research update and case study— Clinical trial done on Phala Ghrita to evaluate its efficacy on female infertily shows that Uttara Vasti of Phala Ghrita is effective in the treatment of infertility. It also have significant role in other complaints like menstrual disorder, lower abdominal pain, tenderness and dyspareunia.

Shaubhagya Sunthi कर्षोन्मितं वापि समीक्ष्य शस्तं सौभाग्यशुण्ठी कथिता भिषग्भिः ॥ अग्निप्रदा सूतिगदापहा च सर्वातिसारग्रहणीहरा च ॥ (भैषज्यरत्नावली, स्त्रीरोगाधिकार, 396-399) Agnimndya , grahani , sutika roga and to prevent post delivery problems of impaired lactation along with body pain etc.

Probable mode of action Sunthi act as Agnidipak , and Aam Pachak and helpful in Agnimandya and Grahani . Grita having properties like Tridosha Shamak, Dugdha Vardhak . Shatpushpa , Twak , Pippali , Jeerak acts as Dugdh vardhaka . Jeerak acts as Garbhashaya shodhak . Musta, Chitraka= Garbhashaya sankochak Shatpushpa - Artavjanan

Research study Saubhagya Shunthi Paka along with Balant Kadha was studied for its effect in post caesarian analgesia in post caesarian section cases. This combination was found to act as analgesic in post caesarian section cases. It was studied in total 50 of patiens . The dose given was Shaubhagya Shunthi Paka 10 gm twice a day along with warm water and Balant Kadha 20 ml twice a day with equal quantity of water after both meal.

Shatavari Ghrit शतावरीमूल तुलाश्चतस्त्रः सम्प्रपीडयेत् । रसेन क्षीर तुल्येन पचेत्तेन घृताढकम् ॥ जीवनीयैः शतावर्या मृद्धीकाभिः परुषकैः । प्रियालैश्चाक्षकैः पिष्टैद्वियष्टिमधुकैः पचेत् ॥ सिद्धे शीते च मधुनः पिप्पल्याश्च पलाष्टकम् । दत्त्वा दशपलञ्चात्र सितायास्तद्विमिमितम् ॥ ब्राह्मणान् प्राशयेत्पूर्वं लिह्यात्पाणितलं ततः । योन्यसृक्शुक्रदोषघ्नं वृष्यं पुंसवनं च तत् ॥ क्षतक्षयं रक्तपित्तं कासं श्वासं हलीमकम् । कामलां वातरक्तं च विसर्प हृच्छिरोग्रहम् ॥ उन्मादायमसंन्यासं वातपित्तात्मकं जयेत् ॥ -- भैषज्यरत्नावली 13/139-144)

Probable mode of action Shatavari is having Madhura and Tikta rasa, Madhur vipaka , and Sheet virya = it pacifies vata and pitta. Shatavari is having Stanyajanan , Shukrala properties so it helps in improving breast milk and sperm quality. Due to its Balya property it nourishes the body. Medhya property of ghrit is useful in Unmand and Sanyasa .

SHATAVARI GHRITA CONTRIBUTION TO FEMALE HEALTH: A REVIEW Author = Neha Mamgain , Akansha Anupam , Shikha Pandey Shatavari is a herb which has wide range of medicinal and nutritional properties. It is used singly or in various compound formulations. Shatavari Ghrita is one such formulation which is used through various administration routes and imparts different effects accordingly. It is used in the form of Nasya, Pana, Abhyanga, Basti, Uttar Basti or Yoni Pichu. Its use is equally beneficial for males and females. Shatavari Ghrita has excellent results in menstrual disorders, infertility, inadequate lactation, prolapse, stress, anxiety, sexual dysfunction and post-menopausal symptoms. Its use is highly recommended for lactating women, and it is effective in preventing premature ageing. Shatavari Ghrita can be a natural, cost effective, safe and efficacious solution to almost all conditions and phases of female life.

Arjun Ksheerpaka अर्जुनस्य त्वचा सिद्धं क्षीरं योज्यं हरामये । (भैषज्यरत्नावली, हृदयरोग/11) Arjuna Twak -- 1 Part , Milk -- 15 Part , Water-- 15 Part Probable mode of action = Arjuna is having Hridya property so it acts as cardio tonic. According to modern research it is useful in lowering the cholesterol and blood pressure.

Nutritional value - per 100 gm. Energy value = 410.20 Kcal Protein = 17.20 gm Carbohydrates = 42.10 gm Total fat = 15.90 gm Research study – Clinical study on Arjuna Ksheerpaka Churna to evaluate its efficacy in dyslipidemia shows that it is effective and safe in the management of dyslipidema . Conversion of Arjun Ksheer Paka into Spray dried powder shows that powder is easily soluble in water, having agreeable sweet taste along with pleasant smell, good shelf life as well as nutritive values.

Rasona ksheerpaka साधयेच्छुद्धशुष्कस्य लशुनस्य चुष्पलम् । क्षीरोदकेऽष्टगुणिते क्षीरशेषं च ना पिबेत् ॥ वातगुल्ममुदावर्त गृध्रसीं विषमज्वरम् । हृदरोगं विद्रधिं शोथं साधयत्याशु तत्पयः ॥ --- च. चि. 5/94-95 Probable mode of action = Rasona is having Hridya property and it also acts as Rasayana . It is having five Rasas except Amala Rasa. Due to it's Hridya and Rasayana Guna it acts as Cardio protective. According to modern research garlic reduces the level of total cholesterol and acts as antihyperlipidenic and protects the heart.

A Review of Rasona ksheerpaka and its Potential Activity in Hyperlipidaemia Author- Dr. Ayush Vatan Sharma and Dr. Rekha Bhagwat Shinde Ksheerapaka is one of the unique liquid dosage forms mentioned in the Ayurvedic classics, where both milk and water-soluble active principles are extracted through this method. Snigdha guna enhances snehana and pacifies Vata as well on Rukshata of body. Dadima along with Aamalaki acts as Hridya. Kharjura and Phalasa provides Tarapana to body.

A review on pharmacodynamics properties of the ingredients of kharjuradi mantha and uses of kharjuradi mantha for madathya (alcoholism) in Ayurveda. Author = S.P.A.S. Nishan *1, M.R.M. Wickramasinghe 2 Kharjuradi Manta can be used to balance the defected Doshas in alcoholism, because ingredients having Tridosha Shamaka and Pitta Shamaka properties predominantly. It is also important to correct the impaired Jataragni as it has Agni Deepana properties in nature. Stimulating the Jataragni speeds up the metabolic functions, which in turn accelerates the detoxification of alcohol. Almost all of the ingredients have Rasayana properties, it can be restored the body strength and have beneficial effects on alcoholism . According to the reviewed data it can be concluded that, Kharjuradi Mantha effectively been used in Ayurveda for Madathya (alcoholism) and its related disorders. The ingredients e to wide range of therapeutic effects. Further studies on different parameters are need to be conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the drug.

Brahma rasayan पथ्यासहस्त्रं त्रिगुणधात्रीफलसमन्वितम् । पञ्चानां पञ्चमूलानां सार्धं पलशतद्वयम् ॥जले दशगुणे पत्क्त्वा दशभागस्थिते रसे । आपोथ्य कृत्वा व्यस्थीनि विजयामलकान्यथ ॥विनीय तस्मिन्निर्यूहे योजयेत्कुडवांशकम्। त्वगेलामुस्तरजनी-पिप्पल्यगुरुचन्दनम् ॥मण्डूकपर्णीकनकशङ्खपुष्पीवचाप्लवम् । यष्ट्याह्वयं विडङ्गं च चूर्णितं तुलयाऽधिकम् ॥सितोपलार्धभारं च पात्राणि त्रीणि सर्पिषः । द्वे च तैलात् पचेत्सर्वं तदग्नौ लेहतां गतम् ॥अवतीर्ण हिमं युञ्ज्याद्विशैः क्षौद्रशतैस्त्रिभिः । ततः खजेन मथितं निदध्याद् घृतभाजने ॥या नोपरुन्ध्यादाहारमेकं मात्राऽस्य सा स्मृता । षष्टिक पयसा चात्र जीर्णे भोजनमिष्यते ॥वैखानसा बालखिल्यास्तथा चान्ये तपोधनाः । ब्रह्मणा विहितं धन्यमिदं प्राश्य रसायनम् ॥ तन्द्राश्रमक्लमवलीपलितामयवर्जिताः। मेधास्मृतिबलोपेता बभूवुरमितायुषः ॥ (अष्टाङ्गहृदय, उत्तरस्थान 39/15-23)

Critical review of Brahma Rasayana W.S.R to its immunomodulatory activity The components found in Brahma Rasayana contain immunomodulatory properties. On the basis of this disease resistance property or immunomodular property is also found in Brahma Rasayana . It is an important Rasayana in itself. On the study of each substances, it is found that most of these substances have immunomodulatory properties. Which is beneficial for physical and mental health and at the same time it gives the ability to fight diseases.

Clinical Efcacy and Safety of Brahma Rasayana in Apparently Healthy Elderly Persons: A Prospective Multicenter Open-label Study Brahma Rasayana has provided highly signicant improve- ment in somatic, psychological, and psychosomatic (sub- jective and objective) parameters including significant reduction in fasting blood sugar and statistically significant rise in vitamin D3 in apparently healthy elderly volunteers with no AE or ADR. Hence, it can be concluded that Brahma Rasayana can be acknowledged as an effective medication with Dhatu Poshaka , Balya, and Ojo- vardhaka properties, which is safe and effective to be used in people for revi-talization , rejuvenation, and immune-stimulant activities.
