Present Simple vs Present Continuous Examples: Rebecca works for Price Waterhouse Cooper. <-> John is working at McDonald’s. Sara always comes late to class. <-> Sara is always coming late to class.
Present Simple FORM: = Infinitive except he/ she / it = infinitive + (e)s + I work. He works. I do not work. He does not work. ? Do I work? Does he work?
Present Simple USE: To talk about habits, routines and customs EXAMPLES: I usually take the train at 7 a.m. Bob plays football on Mondays .
Present Simple USE: 2. To talk about facts or general truths EXAMPLES: London is the capital of the UK. Water boils at 100° Celsius.
Present Simple USE: 3. To talk about permanent actions or situations. EXAMPLES: Rebecca works for Price Waterhouse Cooper. I live in Boston.
Present Simple USE: 4. To talk about future events based on a timetable , schedule, programme EXAMPLES: The next train to Amsterdam leaves at 20.15. The film starts at 8 o’clock.
Present Simple USE: 5. To talk about future time in time clauses (when, as soon as, …) and conditional clauses (if …) EXAMPLES: I’ll call you when I arrive in London. I’ll buy you some biscuits if I go to the shop.
Present Simple COMMON PHRASES: Always, often, as a rule, generally (speaking), usually, on the whole, never, once (a week / a month / a year ...), every (Monday / winter / year ...), ...
Present Continuous FORM: present simple of ‘to be’ + -ing form + I am working. He is working. I am not working. He is not working. ? Am I working? Is he working?
Present Continuous USE: action or situation going on now , at the moment of speaking EXAMPLES: Carl is watching TV right now . Are you sleeping ? They are playing chess .
Present Continuous USE: 2. action or situation going on around now (ongoing project) EXAMPLES: I’ m studying to become an accountant. (=this year) Max is writing a report on climate change. (=this semester)
Present Continuous USE: 3. Temporary action or situation EXAMPLES: John is working at McDonalds ( until he gets his degree ) . I’ m currently living with my parents ( while my house is being renovated ) .
Present Continuous USE: 4. To express irritation or annoyance with present habits / routines EXAMPLES: Sara is always coming late to class! I don’t like her because she ’s constantly complaining !
Present Continuous USE: 5. Fixed arrangements or appointments in the future EXAMPLES: I’m seeing my doctor on Tuesday . I’m having lunch with Karen next Friday .
Present Continuous COMMON PHRASES: Right now, at the moment, currently, for the moment, for the time being,..
Extra note: Stative Verbs Some verbs describe a state rather than an action = stative verbs Verbs of thinking : to think, to know, to agree, to remember, ... Verbs of appearance : to look, to seem, ... Verbs of feeling : to love, to hate , to prefer , to want, to envy , ... Verbs of possession : to own, to possess, to belong, ... Verbs of the senses : to hear, to see, to taste, to sound, to smell, ... These verbs are (normally) used in the Present Simple , not the Continuous! She seems upset. She’s seeming upset. This hamburger tastes delicious! This hamburger is tasting delicious!
