Objectives: At the end of this lesson students will be able to:
State Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion.01
Explain Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion.02
03
04
Illustrate the motion of an object during
action-reaction.
Analyze the action and reaction of objects
in motion.

Third Law
of Motion
-It is also known
as the Law of
Interaction. It
states that for
every action
there is an equal
and opposite
reaction.

What is Force?

Force is...
-a push or a pull
that acts upon an
object as a result
of its interaction
with another
object. Therefore,
force is a result
from interaction.

What happens during
the 3rd Law of Motion?

-a push or a pull
that acts upon an
object as a result
of its interaction
with another
object. Therefore,
force is a result
from interaction.

What is
Action-Reaction?

To further explain this, when
you sit in your chair, your body
exerts a downward force on the
chair and the chair exerts an
upward force on your body.
There are two forces resulting
from this interaction - a force
on the chair and a force on your
body. These two forces are
called action and reaction
forces and are the subject of
Newton's third law of motion.

What does the 3rd Law of
Motion statement mean?

It means that in every
interaction, there is a pair of
forces acting on the two
interacting objects. The size of
the forces on the first object
equals the size of the force on
the second object. The direction
of the force on the first object is
opposite to the direction of the
force on the second object.
Forces always come in pairs -
equal and opposite
action-reaction force pairs.

What are the important features
of Newton’s Third Law?

1.The forces exerted.
(the action and
reaction) are
always equal in
magnitude but
opposite in
direction.
2. These forces are
acting on different
bodies or systems.

Applications of Newton’s 3rd
Law of Motion

Rocket Repulsion

Flying an Airplane
or Helicopter

Swimming

Baseball

That is all, Thank
You!
