HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY YOU ALWAYS FALL BACK ON THE GROUND WHEN YOU JUMP???
WHAT CAUSES US TO FALL BACK ON THE GROUND AFTER JUMPING???
WHAT IS GRAVITY??
WHO DISCOVERED THE FORCE OF GRAVITY?? SIR ISAAC NEWTON discovered that the same force that causes objects to fall back on Earth is the same force that keeps the moon in orbit around the Earth ( Itinhingwe , n.d ). He defined it with his LAW OF UNIVERSAL GRAVITATION.
LAW OF UNIVERSAL GRAVITATION
DEFINITION The law of universal gravitation states that ‘ Every object in the universe attracts every other body with a gravitational force that is directly proportional to the product of the objects’ masses and inversely proportional to the square of the dictance between their centres . ( Susere , n.d )
Consider any two objects with masses m1 and m2: r represents the distance between their centres. According to Newton’s Third Law, these objects exerts the same force F but in opposite direction. This force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centres” Therefore: F ∝ 1/r2 This inverse square relationship was found by observing the orbit of the Moon around the Earth. (Molefe, 2023)
The combination of the two relationships above results into: F ∝ m1 × m2/r2 Then when the proportionality constant, G, is introduced we get: F = Gm1m2/r2 This is the formula that is used in calculations involving universal gravitation. (Molefe, 2023)
FORMULA Where F is the gravitational force m is the mass of the bodies G is the universal gravitational constant, G= 6.7×10-11 N.m2.kg-2 r is the distance between the centres of the bodies. (Henning & Gray, 2023)
ACCELERATION DUE TO GRAVITY As with any other force, gravity also causes objects to accelerate( Itinhingwe , n.d ). The acceleration due to gravity is always 9.8m/s2 for all objects on Earth ( Susere , n.d ) The direction of this acceleration is always downwards. This acceleration due to gravity is also referred to as the gravitational pull as it pulls objects towards the centre of the earth causing them to fall back (Henning & Gray, 2023).
