Department of Mechanical Engineering NPT (NON PNEUMATIC TYRE) S C H O O L O F E N G I N E E R I N G Technical Seminar Presentation on Presented By THAGGELLA TANEESH (21EG103A34) Under the Guidance of Mr. SADHANANDAM M. Tech.,( Ph.D ) Assistant Professor

Abstract Non-pneumatic tyre technology can overcome the safety problems of traditional pneumatic tyres . Hence, it is expected to improve driving safety significantly. In recent years, this technology has received extensive attention. Initially, the fundamental concept of non-pneumatic tyres is introduced, and their structural characteristics are described in detail. Fig. 1. Non pneumatic tyre

Introduction Non-pneumatic tires, also known as airless tires, are tires that do not rely on air pressure to support the load. They are made from solid rubber or plastic compositions, which means they cannot be punctured and do not require regular inflation checks. These tires are commonly used on small vehicles like ride-on lawn mowers and motorized golf carts, as well as on heavy equipment where the risk of tire punctures is high. Since their earlier invention in the 1920s, NPTs have gained more attention due to their advantages over pneumatic tires, including immunity to punctures and flats, higher durability, and reduced maintenance needs.

Types of Non pneumatic tyres Honeycomb Spokes Flexible Radial Spokes Spring tire

The design of non-pneumatic tires can vary widely, with some featuring concave sidewalls that enhance flexibility and performance, while others use unique structures like honeycomb or convex designs. Materials used in their construction include solid rubber, polyurethane, and composite materials like aramid pulp, carbon nanotubes, and glass fibre

History of NPT In 2005, Michelin started developing an integrated tire and wheel combination, the "Tweel" (derived from "tire" and "wheel," which are combined into one new, fused part), which operates entirely without air. Michelin claims its "Tweel" has load carrying, shock absorbing, and handling characteristics that compare favorably to conventional pneumatic tires. However , the tire has a lot of vibration when driving over 80 km/h (50 mph). Therefore the tire is only available for golf carts, ATV's and skid steer vehicles. In 2019 however Michelin and GM announced their goal of making a new airless tire for passenger vehicles available in 2024.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Durability Low Maintenance No Blowout Risk Environmentally Friendly Enhanced Load Distribution Unique Design Features

To improve the design and performance of non-pneumatic tyres , with innovations such as V-shaped spokes enhancing their supporting performance and aerodynamic characteristics. As of now, non-pneumatic tyre technology is expected to significantly improve driving safety and is receiving extensive attention in the field of tyre research. These tyres can remain mobile even if some of the spokes are damaged or missing, and they are durable and long-lasting, capable of withstanding gunfire or explosions. Conclusions
