The primary goals of this presentation are as follows:
Discuss the organizational issue of interprofessional communication gaps.
Explain the importance of a multidisciplinary team in resolving this issue.
Develop an evidence-based plan proposal using strategies to bridge
communication gaps.
Discuss implementation and evaluation strategies so stakeholders can effectively
carry out and assess the plan.
Organizational or Patient Issues
The worldwide healthcare industry encounters a significant challenge in the form of the
interprofessional communication gap, particularly prevalent within hospitals. At the
forefront of any healthcare system, nurses play a crucial role as they are the primary
group responsible for interacting with patients. Therefore, maintaining a robust frontline
workforce is essential for any organization. The reasons contributing to the
interprofessional communication gap encompass various factors, including cultural and
language barriers, inadequate interprofessional education, hierarchical structures, and a
lack of clearly defined roles for nurses (Berry, 2019).
Goals to Improve the Issue
The issue at hand is the interprofessional communication gap within the nursing
department, which poses significant challenges within healthcare settings. Effective and
efficient communication is pivotal for the functioning of an interprofessional healthcare
team and ultimately impacts patient care outcomes. Striving to improve this issue, the
goal is to enhance collaborative practice, patient safety, and the quality of care. An
interdisciplinary team approach can immensely help to tackle this problem. By engaging
members from diverse healthcare professions, such as nurses, physicians,
administrators, and patients, a culture of shared learning and respect can be fostered
(Haddad et al., 2021).
Potential Consequences
The potential consequences of not addressing this communication gap are numerous.
They include increased patient safety risks due to medical errors, delays in treatment,
reduced patient satisfaction, decreased team morale and job satisfaction among nursing
staff, and ultimately, high nurse turnover. In addition, such gaps could also impact the
reputation of the healthcare organization negatively. Therefore, it is crucial for the
audience, particularly healthcare stakeholders, to invest effort in resolving this issue.
Ensuring a robust interprofessional communication system within the nursing
department is central to delivering high-quality patient care and fostering a positive work
environment (Brock et al., 2020).

Interdisciplinary Team Approach
An interdisciplinary team approach is highly critical in addressing the issue of
interprofessional communication gaps due to the collaborative and comprehensive
expertise it offers. A unified team composed of a diverse group of healthcare providers
(chief of nursing, charge nurse, project manager, scheduling manager, human resource
manager) can each bring unique skills and viewpoints to the table. This diversity
enables tackling different aspects of the issues, thus providing comprehensive
solutions. To address this issue, a collaborative team approach is suggested as a
solution.
Chief of Nursing: Should identify challenges and make improvements based on
presented data.
Charge Nurses: Should interact regularly with every team member to identify
and address any issues contributing to a negative work environment. They
should also handle staffing shortages effectively.
Project Manager: Should use the PDSA methodology to oversee the creation
and implementation of the on-call schedule rotation.
Scheduling Manager: Should oversee employee satisfaction, scheduling,
resource utilization, reviews, mentoring, and interviews. They must interpret data
to create relevant strategies.
Human Resources Department: Should analyze data to develop a budget
proposal and predict the number of new hires required for the facility. They
should also evaluate existing employee performance based on the data.
Evidence-Based Interdisciplinary Plan
An evidence-based interdisciplinary plan to address interprofessional communication
gaps might include components such as implementing a standardized communication
tool, education and training sessions, and a feedback and evaluation process. It builds
upon multiple sources of recent evidence showing that structured communication can
enhance team collaboration, decrease communication errors, and improve patient
outcomes (Hanson & Brinton, 2020).
Implementation of the Plan
The application of the PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) cycle in executing an evidence-based
interdisciplinary plan is aimed at tackling interprofessional communication gaps and
improving care management efficiency. Considering the supporting evidence for the
effectiveness of interdisciplinary collaboration and the PDSA cycle in healthcare (Nugus
et al., 2020), it is highly probable that this approach will yield positive results.
Management of Human and Financial Resources

The interdisciplinary plan can be implemented to mitigate the communication gap and
help in the management of human and financial resources available within the hospital.
Each member of the healthcare team should have a good understanding of their role
and responsibilities, as well as those of their team members, to encourage effective
communication. Regular interdisciplinary meetings should be held to discuss patient
care, task delegation, and resolution of communication issues. These meetings create a
platform for understanding expectations and planning collaboratively.
Evidence-Based Evaluation Criteria
The successful outcome of a project addressing a communication gap would be
enhanced interdisciplinary teamwork, improved flow of information, reduced
misunderstandings, and increased job satisfaction among team members. The degree
of success can be quantified by set percentages of improvement in these areas.
Conclusion
In conclusion, addressing communication gaps among nurses in HCA Healthcare
through the lens of a PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) cycle in an interdisciplinary team
context can lead to substantial improvements in team coordination, patient care, and
overall morale in a healthcare setting. The introduction of the PDSA cycle as an
evidence-based intervention is a testament to the possibility of continual improvement in
communication.
