RESEARCH UTILIZATION PREPARED BY MRS.AKILA.A, M.Sc (N), M.Sc (PSY) ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
INTRODUCTION Nursing Research is very important because it add to nursing knowledge that nurses can apply in patient care. Nurses can enhance their practice by using the evidences created through research.
RESEARCH UTILISATION It is a process in which a nursing problem in need of scientific solution is identified, the valid findings from literature are located, they are critically evaluated for their applicability to the problem, the research based interventions for use in practice are formulated and ultimately the outcome is evaluated.
Research utilisation is the process of synthesising, disseminating and using research generated knowledge to make an impact on or change in the existing practices to society.
GENERAL BARRIERS TO RESEARCH UTILISATION 1.Gap between research and Practice 2. Lack of understanding of research methodology 3. Resistance to change the practice 4. Lack of continuing education programme 5. Lack of motivation 6. Lack of time
BARRIERS TO RESEARCH UTILISATION BASED ON SOME CATEGORIES Factors related to nurses Nursing research factors Organisational factors Communication factors
Factors related to nurses 1.Lack of time, lack of motivation, confidence, knowledge, money and resources 2. Nurses do not see the value of research for practice 3.Sees only little benefit for self 4. Inflexible and unwilling to change 5.Lack of documented need to change practice. 6. Lack of capability in evaluating the quality of research 7. Lack of discussion with colleagues 8. Unawareness about the importance of the research.
Nursing Research factors 1. Methodological inadequacies 2. Conclusions are not justified. 3.Lack of replication 4.Conflicting results in literatures 5.Uncertainity in believing the results. 6.Lack of appropriate clinical applicable recommendations
Organisational Factors 1. Lack of accessibility to journals and research sources. 2.Lack of fund 3. Not allowing the new implementations 4. Lack of cooperation from physicians 5.Insufficient time on the job 6. Lack of support from staffs 7.Lack of facilities 8.Nurses having lack of authority to change the practice. 9.Lack of generalisation related to settings. 10.Lack of time to read.
Communication factors 1.Lack of collaboration between researchers and clinicians. 2. Lack of presentation of findings to nurses in clinical settings. 3. Lack of publication in clinical research findings. 4. Lack of understandable research publications. 5. Overwhelming contradicting information 6. Implications are not clear 7. Lack of availability of research reports 8. statistical analyses are not understandable 9.Relevent literature not compiled in one place. 10.Research is not relevant to the nurses practice .
FACILITATING RESEARCH UTILISATION 1.Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research 2. Administrative support 3. Sensitising the nursing personnel regarding research
STRATEGIES TO FACILITATE UTILISATION OF NURSING RESEARCH Factors which are important to facilitate the utilisation: Identification of clinically significant problems and issues. Environmental factors Nurses role
Nurse educators Use research findings in lectures Incorporate research findings in clinical assignments Strive to make research exciting, so that the students can be motivated to conduct research activity.
Nurse researchers Focus their research activity on current clinical problems Disseminate research results as early as possible. Present research findings, locally, regionally and nationally. Publish the research findings in clinical as well as scientific journals. Clearly delineate practice implication of results .
Nurse administrators Establish a research friendly culture Encourage clinicians to question traditions Reward risk taking and innovations Require research basis for practice change Incorporate research role in job description Provide research resources. Encourage and support CNE, conference participation, publications Encourage role model research collaboration.
Nurse clinicians Question practice traditions Stay updated with literature Commit to continuous learning Collaborate with researchers Support research conduct in the clinical setting Take the risks to make changes and improve practices
