One University
One Logo

Our logo is the visual symbol
to the outside world of who we are
and what we stand for.
Protecting it should be a priority.

Hi. Nice to meet you.
DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A UNIFIED UNIVERSITY?

WE DISCOVERED HUNDREDS OF VARIATIONS OF OUR LOGO.

Why does this matter?

We are in global competition to attract the best
students, faculty, and employees.

A consistent and coordinated visual identity
is more easily recognized worldwide.

And when our efforts are coordinated university-wide,
it adds to each unit’s value while reinforcing
the collective value of the institution.

In today’s environment, each one of these
inconsistencies is captured, broadcast far and wide
and linger out there for all eternity.
An organization that doesn’t care about its brand
sends an implicit message that it doesn’t care
about its customers.

Use top/bottom, left/right positioning to
communicate hierarchy or organizational structure.
Do not make the logo the most dominant image on
the page, and do not use it in a sentence.

DO NOT CREATE NEW LOGOS
1. A new logo has no inherent value for your audience. The NYU logo and
the brand it represents are trusted—which your unit can immediately
benefit from.
2. A new logo contributes to the already cluttered visual landscape.
Your audience doesn’t have the time to decipher what a new logo means.
3. Most units—unlike large corporations—do not have the financial
resources to effectively promote a new logo.

Communications Audit
• Collect all current communications (print, digital)
• Review them for visual consistency (logo, color)
• Analyze them for effectiveness (simplify)
• Develop a creative brief (audience, purpose, goals)
A communications audit is a good opportunity to take a
fresh look at pieces that may have been recycled through
the years. Ask yourself if they match the current goals of
the University and your unit and are still necessary.
