Introduction History Symptoms Cause D iagnosis Treatment Our Goal

Ego syntonic and enduring, Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is an axiomatic Axis II pattern producing a marked behavioral, cognitive, and affective signature. The obsessive person is organized and perfectionistic, miserly and stubborn, conscientious and scrupulous, retentive and controlling  Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders   Introduction

All of life’s pleasures—friendship, love, leisure, and relaxation—are subordinated to labor. Being so rigidly invested in work at the expense of love Persons affected with this disorder may find it hard to relax, always feeling that time is running out for their activities, and that more effort is needed to achieve their goals.  Introduction

In 1908,  Sigmund Freud  named what is now known as obsessive–compulsive or anankastic personality disorder " anal retentive  character ".  He identified the main strands of the personality type as a preoccupation with  orderliness ,  parsimony  (frugality), and obstinacy ( rigidity  and  stubbornness ). The concept fits his theory of  psychosexual development . History

OCPD has had its great synthesizers:  Millon and Davis (1996 ) Pollak (1979) Saltzman (1985 ) Pfohl and Blum (1991 ) History

Such synthesizers, while they also promoted a more nuanced understanding of OCPD through original contributions, performed their most valuable service in consolidation. Through their deep analysis and judicious review, themes, traits, and patterns stood out in stark relief. History

Is preoccupied with details, rules, lists, order, organization, or schedules to the extent that the major point of the activity is lost Shows perfectionism that interferes with task completion (e.g., is unable to complete a project because his or her own overly strict standards are not met) Is excessively devoted to work and productivity to the exclusion of leisure activities and friendships (not accounted for by obvious economic necessity) Is overconscientious , scrupulous, and inflexible about matters of morality, ethics, or values (not accounted for by cultural or religious identification) Symptoms of OCPD

Is unable to discard worn-out or worthless objects even when they have no sentimental value Is reluctant to delegate tasks or to work with others unless they submit to exactly his or her way of doing things Adopts a miserly spending style toward both self and others; money is viewed as something to be hoarded for future catastrophes Shows significant rigidity and stubbornness Symptoms of OCPD

Researchers have set forth both genetic and environmental theories for what causes OCPD. Under the genetic theory, people with a form of the  DRD3 gene  will probably develop OCPD and depression, particularly if they are male. G enetic concomitants may lie dormant until triggered by events in the lives of those who are predisposed to OCPD. These events could include trauma faced during childhood, such as physical, emotional, or other psychological trauma. Under the environmental theory, OCPD is a learned behavior. Causes of OCPD

Treatment The main treatments are: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT ) Medication Combination of CBT and Medication

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave   Break down your problems into their separate parts, such as your thoughts, physical feelings and actions . Use technique of ERP encourages you to face your fear and let the obsessive thoughts occur without "putting them right "  Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

The main type of medication you may be prescribed Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) It increase the levels of a chemical called serotonin in your brain SSRIs are a type of antidepressant. It work in people with OCD regardless of their level of depression The doses that have been shown to be effective in OCD are also higher than those generally used for depression. Medication
