FOUR PAIRS OF DIMENSION VERBAL/NONVERBAL DIMENSIONS- encompass the use of language, the words chosen (verbal dimension) as well as the facial expressions, gestures, and bodily movement used (nonverbal dimension).

FOUR PAIRS OF DIMENSION 2. ORAL/WRITTEN DIMENSIONS- mean spoken communication (oral dimension) and the transcript of thoughts and ideas (written dimension).

TYPES OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

PARALANGUAGE is about “how something is said, not what is said. Saying “I love you” with an angry tone is a contradictory message.

2. FLOWERS say, for many of us, what we cannot say ourselves.

3. COLORS -have certain meanings based on the dictates of culture and gender.

4. CHRONEMICS - shows how time is viewed differently in various countries.

5. PROXEMICS -the use of space provides us with ideas about how close or how far people are from the center of power or where a person is in the social ladder.

6. HAPTICS -or the use of touch is one of the most powerful of the types of nonverbal communication.

7. GESTURES - are the most often used type of nonverbal communication. Speech, to be understandable and interesting to a listener, must be accompanied by different gestures.

8. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS -is the type of nonverbal communication that assists the listener in understanding the message better.

8. Posture and Personal Appearance -When one carries oneself well and with confidence, people will want to listen.

Verbal Communication

Characteristics of Verbal Communication

DISPLACEMENT -means that language permits us to discuss topics that cut across time and space, reality, fantasy.

2. RAPID FADING - means that verbal messages must be received immediately after they are sent or they will be lost.
