ARNIS IS A TRADITIONAL FILIPINO MARTIAL ART. ITS ROOTS AND ORIGIN IN FILIPINO
CULTURE AND HISTORY ARE STILL UNKNOWN , AND NOBODY COULD TELL EXACTLY
TYHE DATE OF ITS INCEPTION. IT REMAINS UNCLEAR BECAUSE THERE ARE NO WRITTEN
DOCUMENTS. THIS KIND OF SELF-DEFENSE OR ART OF FIGHTING INVOLVES THE USE OF
ONE OR A COMBINATION OF THE FOLLOWING ; ONE STICK , PAIRED STICK , A LONG
AND SHORT STICK , AND A SHARP WEAPON. THIS FORM OF SELF- DEFENSE WAS
PRACTICED EVEN BEFORE THE SPANIARDS CAME TO THE PHILIPPINES . LAPU-LAPU AND
HIS MEN ARE KNOWN TO BE THE FIRST MASTER OF ARNIS BECAUSE THEY WON THE
BATTLE WITH MAGELLAN USING WOODEN INSTRUMEN TS , SPEAR , BOLOS . ARNIS DE
MANO CAME TO BE KNOWN BY THIS TERM DUE TO SPANISH INFLUENCE , WHICH
ORIGINATED FROM THE SPANISH WORD “ ARARMOR ,” NES” WHICH MEANS
“TRAPPINGS’ OR “ DEFENSIVE ARMOR” ,, WHILE “DE MANO “ MEANS “BY HAND”.

TO EACH OTHER AT 45 DEGREES. HOLD
THE STICKS AT BOTH ENDS IN FRONT OF
THE BODY . THIS STANCE IS USED IN
PREPARATION FOR COURTESY OR “
BOWING” BEFORE THA START OF
SPARRING.

STAND STRAIGHT WITH THE LEGS WIDE
APART. THIS STANCE IS COMMONLY
USED WHEN STANDING AT EASE BEFORE
THE START OF A TRAINING OR
TOURNAMENT.
2. OPEN LEG STANCE

STRADDLE
STANCE
THIS IS THE SAME AS THE OPEN LEG
STANCE , BUT THE FEET ARE WIDER
APART WITH THE KNEES BENT , AND
HAND(S) WITH THE STICK(S) ARE IN
FIGHTING STANCE POSITION . THIS
STANCE IS USUALLY USED FOR
BLOCKING THE OPPONENT’S STRIKES TO
THE SIDE OF THE BODY.
3. STRADDLE STANCE

CAT STANCE
THIS IS DONE BY PLACING ONE FOOT AT
THE BACK WHILE THE ARMS AND HANDS
ARE IN FIGHTING STNACE POSITION . DO
THIS STANCE WITH EITHER RIGHT OR
LEFFT FOOT BACKWARD. THIS STANCE
IS COMMONLY USED WITH FRONTAL
STRIKING OR BLOCKING TECHNIQUES.
4. CAT STANCE

BASICALLY , THERE ARE 12 STRIKING
TECHNIQUES IN ARNIS THAT CONSIST OF
STRIKING , THRUSTING AND BUTTING.
STRIKING MEANS HITTING WITH A STRONG
FORCE AND PRECISIONN AT STRSTEGIC
POINTS . THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE SRIKING
TECHNIQUE IS TO PREVENT THE OPPONENT’S
ABILITY TO ATTACK. THE MOST IMPORTANT
THINGS TO CONSIDER IN STRIKING
TECHNIQUES ARE THE TARGET, STANCE ,
FOOTWORK , AND BODY MOVEMENTS .
WHAT ARE THE STRIKING
TECHNIQUES INVOLVED IN ARNIS ?

IN THIS LESSON , YOU WILL IDENTIFY THE
EIGHT VITAL STRIKING POINTS OF THE BODY
IN ARNIS. YOU CAN EXECUTE THESE
STRIKING TECHNIQUES IN A STATIONARY
POSITION FIGHTING STANCE , EITHER A RIGHT
- FORWARD OR LEFT-FORWARD STANCE .
YOU CAN PRACTICE THESE TECHNIQUES
WITH A PARTNER .

ANYO
An anyo is a creative form of armis which
is equivalent to the other forms of martial
arts.It shows artistic movement and
contains both defensive and offensive
techniques of arnis. It is a combination
of pre-arranged or choreographic arnis
striking , blocking and body movement. IIt
is the application of the skills in arnis.
Anyo is performed with specific weapons
like cane , dagger etc. to show the flow
of the form .This requires a certain
proficiency in beat, tempo , timing , agility
,amd most of all fighting spirit.
