About This Presentation

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a conceptual framework that divides network communications functions into seven layers. Sending data over a network is complex because various hardware and software technologies must work cohesively across geographical and political boundaries.

February 2, 2024 3 Introduction The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a conceptual framework that divides network communications functions into seven layers. Sending data over a network is complex because various hardware and software technologies must work cohesively across geographical and political boundaries. Benefits of OSI Model: Shared understanding of complex systems Faster research and development Flexible standardization

February 2, 2024 5 OSI Model Application Layer Provide service to the end user. Determining the availability of the receiving program. Proxy firewall filtering. Presentation Layer Translating data from one format to another. Translation, compression, encryption/decryption techniques. Session Layer Manage & maintain interaction between communicating devices. Creating a connection between sender & receiver. Transport Layer Heart of OSI Model. Segmentation occurs in this layer. Uses TCP/IP or UDP protocol for faster transmission. Network Layer Manages devices addressing, routing and tracks the location of the devices. Data units are packets. Data Link Layer Reliable transmission of data, Sending error free data, check the frames are damage or not. Physical Layer Transmit & receive individual bits from one node to another.

February 2, 2024 7 Distinguish between two model TCP/IP Model OSI Model TCP refers Transmission Control Protocol & IP means Internet Protocol. OSI refers Open System Interconnection. Implementation of OSI Model Reference Model. It has only four layers. It has seven layers. It is model around which internet is developed. It is a theoretical model. It is more reliable. It is less reliable. TCP/IP follows horizontal approach. OSI follows a vertical approach. Protocol dependant standard. Protocol independent standard.
