Introduction OTC stands for “ over the counter “ drugs. OTC drugs are those drugs which are safe and effective for use by the general public without doctor’s prescription. It is also called prescription de controlled drugs. These have little significant pharmacological activity and therefore the physician need not to be really concerned about their use by the patient themselves. It is primarily used for symptomatic relief. Ex : paracetamol tablet , omeprazole , Micanazole 2% ointment etc….

Types of OTC drugs Analgesics : Medication that relieve the pain. Ex : Acetaminophen Antibiotics : Topical antibiotics used to kill the bacteria. To treat infections or cuts . Ex : Betnovate cream Cough Suppresants : That prevent or stop coughing. Ex : Codeine NSAIDs : Used to treat inflammation , mild to moderate pain and fever. EX : Aspirin
Sales of Over The Counter Drugs It has been expected that around 50% of medicine used in India as Over the counter sales. These drugs find the sales counter of a chemist or a pharmacist. The OTC refers to those which can stock and sell certain drugs without obtaining any type of license required under the D and C act in terms of section 18(c) of the D and C act , 1940 , which states that “no person shall sell two types of drugs, such as prescription drugs and non-prescription drugs.” In terms of rule 123, Schedule K of the D and C Rules, 1945 in which the listed drugs don not need a license for sale if sold by a shop other than a chemists shop .
Schedule K listed drugs include : Drugs not intended for medicinal use Quinine and other anti-malarial drugs. Magnesium sulphate Home remedies : Paracetamol tablets, aspirin tablets antacid preparations , syrup and lozenges for cough , skin ointments, absorbent cotton , gargles are sold under OTC products.
