The Marriage of Iago and Emilia Marriage Disharmony Relationship was not balanced from the start. There was a lack of trust on both sides Jealousy Iago showed some jealousy after hearing rumours about Emilia sleeping with Othello Weak Ties and Love Both sides showed no apparent love for each other and did not represent what a marriage between two people should be like. Irony Othello completely underestimated his wife, leading to his own downfall.

Love vs Duty Cont. Consequences of resistance Developing friendship

Who did Emilia Serve? OR Constantly showed support and care Gave words of wisdom Warned her about the wrongs of men Stayed loyal from the beginning to her death Never fully trusted her husband Aware that her husband was deceitful Defended Desdemona when Iago bashed her Showed some loyalty with the handkerchief DESDEMONA IAGO

Handkerchief Significance of stealing the handkerchief to the plot. What happened after giving the handkerchief to Iago? Redemption? Being honest in the face of controversy without a second thought. Ends with both her and Othello dying.

Death & Redemption 03 Was Emilia’s death deserved or did she prove her worth in the end?

“O thou dull Moor, that handkerchief thou speak’st/ of/ I found by fortune, and did give my husband-/ For often, with a solemn earnestness/ (More than indeed belong’d to such a trifle),/ He begg’d of me to steal’t.” (5.2.267-272)

The Handkerchief Importance to plot Emilia giving it to Iago Backstory Validity

Viewing Both Sides Betrayal Redemption Siding with Iago Not returning the handkerchief Her ignorance Finding Desdemona’s body Exposing Iago for his crimes in front of Othello then also in front of Iago

The Death of Emilia Did she deserve to die? Iago’s part Could it have been prevented? 3 2 1

What If… 3. Emilia didn’t give Iago the handkerchief? 1. Emilia lived? Would she start a new life? Stay with Iago? Would Othello still have died? Would Othello and Desdemona’s relationship be different? Effects on Iago’s plan 2. Emilia actually had an affair with Othello? Would his plan still have worked? What would their relationship be like? 4. Emilia lived in the 21st century? How do you think she’d live? What changes would there be in her personality?
