THE HISTORY OF THE PALM OIL MILL IS TRACED BACK TO MORE
THAN 5000 YEARS AGO WHEN IT WAS USED AS COOKING OIL IN
WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES, IT WAS OCCASIONALLY PURCHASED
BY THE EUROPEAN MERCHANTS BUT IT REMAINED RARE
OUTSIDE WEST AFRICA.
➢THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION IN THE MID-19

CENTURY
CAUSED A SURGE IN DEMAND FOR PALM OIL IN EUROPE, THIS
LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PALM OIL PLANTATIONS.
➢BY THE 1870’S PALM OIL WAS THE PRIMARY EXPORT OF
MANY WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES, HOW EVER PRODUCTION
WAS STILL DEPENDENT ON SEMI WILD PALM GROVES AND
MANUAL PROCESSING.
➢TODAY SOUTH EAST ASIA IS THE CENTRE OF GLOBAL PALM OIL
PRODUCTION, WITH INDONESIA AND MALAYSIA PRODUCING
AROUND 85% OF THE WORLD’S SUPPLY.

LARGE SCALE PALM OIL PROCESSING FEATURES ALL
STAGES REQUIRED TO PRODUCE PALM OIL TO
INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS, AND GENERALLY HANDLE
FROM 3-60 TONNES OF FFB/HR.
LARGE INSTALLATIONS HAVE MECHANICAL HANDLING
SYSTEMS AND OPERATE CONTINOUSLY DEPENDING ON

THE OPTIMAL TIME FOR PLANTING THE OIL PALM IS IN THE RAINY SEASON IN ORDER FOR THE
PLANTS TO ESTABLISH THEIR ROOTS BEFORE DROUGHT. THE PLANT SPROUTS ARE PLACED IN A
TRIANGULAR PATTERN WITH ENOUH SPACECE FOR GROWING (9MX9MX9M). THIS PLANTING
METHOD ALLOWS SPACING AROUND 145 PLANTS PER HECTARE.
IT IS DONE ONCE EVERY TEN DAYS. HARVESTING OF THE PALM FRUIT BUNCHES
INVOLVES CUTTING THE BUNCH FROM THE TREE AND ALLOWING IT TO FALL BY
GRAVITY. BRUSING THE FRUIT INCREASES THE FRESH FATTY ACID WHICH ADDS BITE TO THE
OIL.,EVERYTHING HARVESTED IS RECORDED. HARVESTING IS DONE IN A TEAM OF THREE, THIS
INVOLVES:
1. THE PERSON HARVESTING AND FROND STACKING
2. THE PERSON COLLECTING THE FRESH FRUIT BUNCHES,CUTTING OF LONG STACKS AND STACKING
BUNCHES.
3. THE PERSON COLLECTING LOOSE FRUITS
IT IS A TROPICAL PLANT, SO IT GROWS BEST IN STABLE-WARM AREAS WITH SUFFICIENT SOIL
MOISTURE ALL YEAR ROUND. THE OPTIMAL TEMPERATURES FOR THE CULTIVATION OF OIL PALM
ARE 30–32°C (86–89.6°F) FOR 80 DAYS MINIMUM.
TEMPERATURES BELOW 20°C (68°F) AND ABOVE 40°C (104°F) ARE CRITICAL FOR
GROWING AND ADVERSELY AFFECT CROP PRODUCTION.

METHOD OF MANAGEMENT
EFFLUENT : THIS IS WASTE WATER FROM PALM OIL PROCESSING, IT CAN CONTAIN A MIXTURE OF
ORGANIC MATTER, PALM OIL RESIDUES, SUSPENDED SOLIDS AND POTENTIALLY HARMFUL CHEMICALS.
TREATMENT :THE EFFLUENT IS TREATED IN AEROBIC AND ANAEROBIC PONDS BY THE PALM
OIL MILL BEFORE BEING USED AS FERTILIZERS FOR THE PALM OIL FRUIT PLANTATION
SLUDGE : THE SLUDGE IS THE SOLID WASTE
GOTTEN DURING PAL OIL PROCESSING, IT IS
COMPOSED OF RESIDUAL PALM OIL, FIBER, SHELLS,
AND OTHER SOLID PARTICLES THAT ARE
SEPARATED FROM THE CRUDE OIL DURING
CLARIFICATION, SETTLING AND OTHER TREATMENT
STEPS.
TREATMENT: THE SLUDGE IS FURTHER
PROCESSED TO RECOVER ANY REMAINING PALM
OIL
AND WHEN ALL THE OIL IS RECOVERED, IT IS USED
AS A SOIL CONDITIONER IN THE PALM OIL
FRUIT PLANTATION.
EMPTY PALM FRUIT BUNCHES : THESE
BUNCHES ARE LEFT BEHIND AFTER THE EXTRACTION
OF
PALM SEED FROM THEM. THEY ARE THE FLESHY
OUTER COVERINGS THAT HOLD THE OIL PALM
FRUIT.
TREATMENT: THE EMPTY PALM OIL BUNCHES ARE
USED AS BIOMASS FUEL SOURCE FOR
GENERATING HEAT AND ELECTRICITY. THEY CAN BE
BURNED IN BOILERS TO PRODUCE STEAM
WHICH CAN THEN DRIVE TURBINES FOR ELECTRICAL
GENERATION.

THEY ARE WASTE PRODUCT OF THE PALM OIL INDUSTRY AND ARE OBTAINED AS A RESIDUAL WASTE FROM THE
CRACKING OF PALM KERNELS AND EXTRACTION OF NUTS IN THE MILL
