WHAT IS FOLK DANCE? ~ The oldest form of dance and the earliest form of communication. ~ Traditional dance of a given country which evolved naturally and spontaneously with everyday activities.
WHAT IS FOLK DANCE? ~ It is handed down from generation to generation. ~ It has more or less a fixed movement in their pattern, but may differ in various areas or provinces.

CHARACTERISTICS OF FOLKDANCE: 1. It is traditional , 2. It has an expressive behavior , 3. Simple , basic rhythm dominates the folkdance and establishes the pattern movement , and: 4. It perform a function in the life of the people .
~ Francisca Reyes – Aquino is acknowledged as the pioneer of folk dancing in the Philippines. ~ She is known as the first National Artist for Dance and known as the Mother of Philippine Folk Dance. ~ In 1954, she received the Republic award of Merit given by the late president Ramon Magsaysay for “outstanding contribution towards the advancement of Filipino culture”.
Cariñosa is a traditional Filipino folk dance that originated during the Spanish colonial period. The word cariñosa comes from the Spanish word meaning “loving” or “affectionate.” It is a courtship dance that symbolizes love and romantic pursuit, typically performed by a male and a female dancer. Characteristics of Cariñosa : 1. Graceful and Flirtatious: Dancers perform gentle, flowing movements that express courtship, shyness, and playful affection. 2. Use of Props: It often features a fan and handkerchief, which the female dancer uses to hide her face while teasing and flirting with her partner. 3. Accompanied by Spanish-inspired music: The rhythm and style of the music reflect the Spanish influence on Filipino culture. 4. Costumes: Dancers wear traditional Filipino attire, such as the Maria Clara dress for women and Barong Tagalog for men.
