PGCET Training By Steevan Robert Tellis

Chain Rule Chain rule Principle If the missing part is greater than the given part, then the numerator (n) is kept greater than the denominator (d) i.e. n/d>1, where n & d are the given parts of other element. If the missing part is smaller than the given part, then the numerator (n) is kept smaller than the denominator (d) i.e. n/d<1, where n & d are the given parts of other element.

If 15 toys cost Rs. 234, what do 35 toys cost? more toys, more cost ( Direct proportion) 15 : 35 :: 234 : x 2. If 36 men can do a piece of work in 25 hours, in how many hours will 15 men do it? Less men, more hours 15 : 36 :: 25 : x

3. If the wages of 6 men for 15 days be Rs. 2100, then find the wages of 9 men for 12 days? more men, more wages ( direct) less days, less wages ( direct) men 6 : 9 days 15: 12 :: 2100 : x 6x15x X = 9 x 12 X 2100

4. If 15 men working for 9 hours a day, can reap a field in 16 days, in how many days will 18 men reap the field, working 8 hours a day? more men, less days ( indirect) Less hours, more days ( indirect) men 18 : 15 days 8 : 9 :: 16 : x

Practice Problems 1. 12 examiners work 16 hours a day to check 24000 answer sheets in 18 days. Now, 24 examiners would check how many answer sheets working 6 hours a day in 36 days? 2. A certain number of men can complete a piece of work in 180 days. If there are 30 men less, it will take 20 days more for the work to be completed. How many men were there originally?

3. A man can walk a certain distance at a uniform speed in 100 days. How long will it take him to cover twice the distance at half the normal speed ? 4. A 100 m long 3 m high and 30 cm wide wall is built by 30 men, 20 women and 50 children working 9 hours a day in 20 days. How long a wall 1.5 m high 30 cm wide can be built by 15 men, 25 women and 35 children working 2 hour a day in 15 days (given men, women and children are equally efficient)?

Time and Work Worker A takes 8 hours to do a job. Worker B takes 10 hours to do the same job. How long should it take both A and B, working together but independently to do the same job? 2. A and B together can complete a piece of work in 4 days. If A alone can complete the same work in 12 days, in how many days can B alone complete that work?

3. A and B can do a piece of work in 18 days; B and C can do it in 24 days; A and C can do it in 36 days. In how many days will A, B and C finish it , working together and separately. 4. A is twice as good a workman as B and together they finish a piece of work in 18 days. In how many days will A alone finish the work?

5. A can do a certain job in 12 days. B is 60% more efficient than A. How many days does B alone take to do the same job?

Time and distance

A man covers the first half of the journey at the speed of 40kmph and the remaining at the speed of 60kmph. Find his average speed ? Champaklal covers 20 kms at the speed of 15kmph and other 10kms at the speed of 6kmph. What is his average speed throughout this journey?

3. How many minutes does Adithya take to cover a distance of 400m, if he runs at a speed of 20 kmph ? 4. A dog takes 4 leaps for every 5 leaps of a hare but 3 leaps of a dog are equal to 4 leaps of the hare. Compare their speeds. 5. Peter can cover a certain distance in 1 hr 24 min. By covering two-third of the distance at 4 kmph and rest at 5 kmph . Find the total distance.

Problems on trains A train 100 m long is running at the speed of 30 km/hr. Find the time taken by it to pass a man standing near the railway line. A train is moving at a speed of 132 kmph . If the length of the train is 110 metres , how long will it take to cross a railway platform 165 metres long? A man is standing on a railway bridge which is 180m long. He finds that a train crosses the bridge in 20 seconds but himself in 8 seconds. Find the length of the train and its speed.

4. A train 150 m long is running with a speed of 68 kmph . In what time will it pass a man who is running at 8 kmph in the same direction in which the train is going? 5. A train 100 meters long takes 6 seconds to cross a man walking at 5 kmph in a direction opposite to that of the train. Find the speed of the train.

Boats and Streams Direction along the stream is called downstream Direction against the stream is called upstream If the speed of a boat in still water is u km/hr and the speed of the stream is v km/hr
