Phonetics

Phonetics and Phonology Phonetics : The study of speech sounds, focusing on how they are made, heard, and transmitted. Phonology : The study of how sounds interact within a language to form meaning.

Types of Phonetics Acoustic Phonetics – The study of the physical properties of speech and aims to analyse sound wave signals that occur within speech through varying frequencies, amplitudes and durations. Auditory Phonetics – The branch of phonetics concerned with the hearing of speech sounds and with speech perception. Articulatory Phonetics – The study of how speech sounds are physically produced by the human vocal tract.

Fundamental Concepts in Phonetics Phone : Any distinct speech sound, regardless of its role in meaning. Example: Example: [k] in [ kæt ] (cat) is a phone. Phoneme : The smallest sound unit that can change the meaning of a word. Example: /s/ vs. /z/ → "sip" / sɪp / vs. "zip" / zɪp / Allophone : Different variations of the same phoneme that do not alter meaning. Example: The /t/ in "butter" (flapped [ ɾ ] in American English) and "top" are pronounced differently but represent the same phoneme.
