EXPERIMENTAL PHONETICS Group 2

PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY: AN OVERVIEW Phonetics and Phonology are essential branches of linguistics. While Phonology investigates the sound systems and rules that govern hown sounds function in various languages. Phonetics delves into the physical aspect of sound like how they are produced by the articulatory system , how they are transmitted through the air , and how they are perceived by the auditory system. Understanding both areas is crucial for analyzing language and communication.

PHONETICS CLASSIFICATIONS Experimental Phonetics Investigates the physical aspects of sound production and perception using scientific methods. Acoustic Phonetics Studies the physical properties of sound waves such as wavelength, amplitude, and frequency. Articulatory Phonetics Explore how speech like lips, tongue, and vocal folds work together to produce sounds Auditory Phonetics Focuse on how sounds are heard and processed by the auditory system.

ARTICULATORY PROCESS Speech Mechanism- Speech is shaped by various organs like the lungs, tongue, teeth, and vocal folds, which work together during sound production. Pulmonic Sounds - This refers to sounds produced by air pushed from the lungs, which is the most common mechanism for speech. Ingressive and Egressive- Ingressive involves drawing air into the lungs, while egressive represents air being pushed out during speech.

PROCESS OF VARTICULATION A process where one sound becomes more like a neighboring sound. Occur when a sound is omitted in speech Reduction of consonant in certain contexts DELETION ASSIMILATION WEAKENING/ LENITION INSERTION/ EPENTHESIS Adding a sound to aid pronunciation. METATHESIS Reordering of sounds within a word. LENGTHENING Stretching of sounds, often in vowel production.

AUDITORY PHONETICS SOUND PERCEPTION The focus of auditory phonetics is on how sounds are perceived by the human auditory system. SOUND JOURNEY BRAIN PROCESSING

DESCRIPTIVE PHONETICS Vowels Voice sounds that vary in quality and length, crucial for word formation. Consonants Produced with closure or restriction in the vocal tract, emphasizing word distinctiveness.
