About This Presentation

explaining photosynthesis

Slide Content

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a by-product .

Different steps in photosynthesis Light absorption : The plant or bacteria absorbs sunlight using a green pigment called chlorophyll, which is found in structures called chloroplasts. Light reaction : The light energy is used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is used to make a molecule called NADPH, which carries electrons. The oxygen is released as a by-product. The light energy is also used to make a molecule called ATP, which provides energy. Dark reaction : The NADPH and ATP are used to convert carbon dioxide into glucose, which is a type of sugar. This is also called the Calvin cycle. The glucose is used as food by the plant or bacteria, or stored for later use.

Importance of Photosynthesis Converts carbon dioxide into oxygen. This process cannot be performed by all the living living animals. Converts light energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose The energy produced by photosynthesis is the start of the food chains of the most aquatic and land animals The high oxygen levels in the atmosphere is derived directly from the reactions of photosynthesis Photosynthesis is the source of countless vegetable, animal and organic side products
