2. Different steps in photosynthesis Light absorption : The plant or bacteria absorbs sunlight using a green pigment called chlorophyll, which is found in structures called chloroplasts. Light reaction : The light energy is used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is used to make a molecule called NADPH, which carries electrons. The oxygen is released as a by-product. The light energy is also used to make a molecule called ATP, which provides energy. Dark reaction : The NADPH and ATP are used to convert carbon dioxide into glucose, which is a type of sugar. This is also called the Calvin cycle. The glucose is used as food by the plant or bacteria, or stored for later use.
