The Great Himalayan Mountains, the youngest fold mountains seperates the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan plateau. This sky-rocketing range, spans across four countries: India, Bhutan, China and Pakistan. It is home to the Earth’s longest peaks, including Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and Karakoram. The Himalayas have profoundly shaped the cultures of South Asia and Tibet. Many Himalayan peaks are sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism. THE HIMALAYAN MOUNTAINS

The Great North Indian Plains, a vast alluvial plain that spans over 700,000 square kilometres and encompasses northern regions of the Indian subcontinent, including most of northern and eastern India, most of eastern Pakistan, virtually all of Bangladesh, and southern parts of Nepal. This plain is created by the alluvial deposits of the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra river systems. The climate is subtropical to tropical with moderate annual temperatures. They are one of the most fertile regions and are known for their agricultural productivity. THE NORTH INDIAN PLAINS

The Peninsular Plateau is a triangular tableland of 16 lakh square km made as a result of the breakup and drifting of the Gondwana continent, making it one of the oldest landmasses. The apex of the plateau is in Kanyakumari. The average height of the plateau is 600-900 m above sea level. The Narmada, Tapi, Godavari, Kaveri, Krishna and Mahanadi are the main rivers flowing through the highland. It is full of tors, rift valleys, spurs, hummocky hills and quartzite dykes. THE PENINSULAR PLATEAU

The Thar Desert is the world’s 18 th largest arid region located in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent that covers an area of 200,00 square km in India and Pakistan. Present in Rajasthan and partly in Punjab, it experiences a subtropical desert climate. The annual rainfall in the desert ranges from 4 inches to 20 inches in the east. The Thar Desert is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including the caracal, blackbuck, chinkara, desert fox and desert cat. THE INDIAN DESERT

The Coastal Plains of India are a low-lying and flat land adjacent to the seashore longing 7,516.6 km. Lying on both sides of India, the eastern coastal plains extend from West Bengal to Kanyakumari, while the western coastal plains from Rann of Kutch to Kanyakumari. The eastern coastal plains are divided into 2 parts: Northern Circar and Coromandel Coast. The western coastal plain in a three-section: Konkan, Kannad and Malabar Coast. It is known for trade and fishing. THE COASTAL PLAINS

India is home to a total of 1,382 islands, including uninhabited ones. The two major island groups are the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal and Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea. These lonely landmasses attract many tourists contributing to India’s economy. Other notable islands include: Sriharikota Island: It is home to India’s spaceport Majuli Island: Largest riverine island formed by Brahmaputra THE ISLANDS

DEVELOPMENT OF INDIA India’s physical features have played a significant role in the country’s development. The country’s coastal plains have been instrumental in the development of trade, agriculture, tourism, and industrial centres. The coastal regions offer crucial hinterlands for large ports and are known for salt-making and fishing. The fertile and rich soil of the coastal plains allows for the cultivation of several crops. Including rice. India’s islands are also an essential part of the country’s development. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are home to the only active volcano in India, while the Lakshadweep Islands are known for their coral reefs, lagoons and pristine beaches. These islands attract tourists from all over the world, contributing to India’s economy. The Thar Desert is another physical feature that has contributed to India’s development. The desert is home to several flora and fauna species, including the caracal, blackbuck, chinkara, desert fox and desert cat. The desert also has significant reserves of minerals such as gypsum, phosphate and silica sand.

In conclusion, India’s physical features have contributed significantly to its development by providing resources such as minerals and fertile soil for agriculture. The coastal plains have been instrumental in the development of trade and industry, while the islands have contributed to tourism and space exploration. The Thar Desert is home to several flora and fauna species and has significant mineral reserves.
