PLANAR INVERTED F ANTENNA 8/31/2017

Introduction Why PIFA? Design Structure Objective Principle of operation Types of PIFA Application Advantages Disadvantages References 8/31/2017

8/31/2017 1.The Inverted F antenna (IFA) Typically Consists of a rectangular planar element located above a ground plane ,a short circuiting plate or pin, and a feeding mechanism for the planar element. 2. It’s shape appears like an Inverted F and hence named as PLANAR INVERTED F ANTENNA. 3. PIFA is also referred to as short-circuited microstrip antenna due to the fact that it’s structure resembles to short –circuit MSA. 4.It can be considered as a kind of linear inverted F antenna (IFA) with the wire radiator element replaced by a plate to expand the bandwidth.

8/31/2017 It has an omnidirectional radiation pattern and provides high gain in vertical and horizontal direction. It has a simple structure and can be easily hidden in handsets. It has a self resonating structure. Antenna radiator is just mounted above the ground layer, there is PCB plate between the antenna radiation plate and the human brain when using, thus greatly reducing the impact of radiation in human body.

8/31/2017 In wireless communication a low profile antenna that supports multiband wideband operations is required. In order to meet these requirements PIFA is being used. These antennas are compact and support multiband and wideband operations therefore such antennas are suitable for the devices where space is a major issue. PIFA has a low backward radiation and hence it minimizes electromagnetic wave absorption or SAR. Thus PIFA is an antenna with many wide applications in today’s electronics world.

8/31/2017 The working principle of PIFA is same as the microstrip antenna . Lp +Wp= λ /4 (1) Where Lp is the top patch length & Wp is top patch width. λ is wavelength corresponding to resonant frequency. when W/Lp =1 then Lp+h= λ /4 (2) When W=0 then Lp+Wp+h= λ /4 (3)

8/31/2017 There are mainly six types of PIFA. Each antenna has it’s various kind of application.

8/31/2017 The software used to design and simulate the high frequency antennas is “HIGH FREQUENCY SIMULATOR STRUCTURE”. HFSS HFSS (High Frequency Simulator Structure) is a high performance full wave electromagnetic (EM) field simulator. It integrates simulation, visualization, solid modeling, and automation in an easy to learn environment where solutions to 3D EM problems are quickly and accurate obtained .

8/31/2017 It can be hiding into the housing of the mobile while comparable to whip/rod/helix antennas. It reduces the backward radiation toward the user’s head , minimizing specific absorption rate(SAR). PIFA it exhibits moderate to high gain in both vertical and horizontal states of presentation. Low profile Compact size Easy fabrication Simple structure

8/31/2017 There are so many properties in PIFA but only one disadvantage is there that make it complicated to use. And that disadvantage is the narrow bandwidth characteristic. Narrow bandwidth characteristic of PIFA is one of the limitations for it’s commercial application for wireless mobile. We can improve it’s B.W. by increasing the size of the feed plate or the width but after that the antenna becomes very sensitive for the changes.

8/31/2017 PIFA antenna for handheld devices. This antenna is widely get used for MIMO applications. PIFA antenna has uses in medical applications also. The Inverted f antenna also used in vehicle telematics.

8/31/2017 PIFA is easy to manufacture and has simple structures. It provides much better scope when compared to other conventional antenna while considering SAR (Specific Absorption Rate). Also the bandwidth of PIFA is higher than other antennas. Therefore it can be concluded that PIFA is expected to have a promising future in wireless technologies.
