STATE VS NATION Nation is “a cultural entity, a group of people who speak the same language, religion, and bound by shared past. (Andrew Heywood, 2007)

Nation vs state State – a political association that association that establishes sovereign jurisdiction within defined territorial borders, and exercises territory through a set of permanent institutions.

Nation-state A form of political organization and a political ideal (Andrew Heywood, 2007) is a system of organization in which people with a common identity live inside a country with firm borders and a single government (Roeder, 2007).

Elements of the state 1. People- Refers to the inhabitants living within the state 2. Territory 3. Government- Refers to the agency through which the will of the state is formulated, expressed and carried out. 4. Sovereignty- Defined as the supreme power of the state to command and enforce obedience to its will from people within its jurisdiction and corollarily , to have freedom from foreign control

Sovereignity a. internal sovereignty- Power of the state to rule within its territory b. external sovereignty- Freedom of the state to carry outs its activities without subjection to or control by other states, often referred to as independence.

Non-sovereign states Hong Kong Bermuda. Greenland. Puerto Rico. Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England, which are non-sovereign parts of the United Kingdom.

Interstate system “ A system of unequally powerful and competing states in which no single state is capable of imposing control on all others. These states are in interaction with one another in a set of shifting alliance and wars and changes in relative power of states upsets any temporary set of alliances, leading to restructuring of balance of power.

neoliberalism - The intensification of the influence and dominance of capital - Values market exchange of acting as a guide to all human action - Emphasizes the significance of contractual relations in the marketplace

Economic sovereignity Economic sovereignty we define as “ability to impose the rules of appropriation, exchange and use of resources.” ( Savanovic , 2014).

In a highly globalized world, is Economic Sovereignty still achievable?
