4. Art M ovement Characteristics Post-Impressionism is an umbrella term that encompasses a variety of artists who were influenced by Impressionism but took their art in other directions. This art movement represented both an extension of Impressionism and a rejection of that style's inherent limitations with an aim in favor of more ambitious expression. Post- Impressionism artwork is highly personal art created by artists who mainly painted alone. There is no single well-defined style of Post-Impressionism, but in general it is less idyllic and more emotionally charged than Impressionist work.
