The need:
SEA, the company that manages the Milan Airport, wanted to improve passengers’
experience in the airport. By improving services such as faster check-in and seat
assignment, passengers would have more time to spend in the shopping area.
The solution:
SEA worked with IBM to implement SEAMI, a customer experience and airport
loyalty program. It provides a personalized passenger experience throughout the
Milan Airport. The program is administered via a membership card, read by RFID
readers in the airport. The system automatically loads customer purchase data,
allowing customer segmentation, customer spending analysis and traffic
management analysis.

The need:
The Chinese government unveiled a blueprint for healthcare reform that aims to
provide affordable healthcare services for all its citizens. To realize the vision, this
provincial health bureau needed to better manage its healthcare services, moving
from an administrative-centric to patient-focused services model and providing
dynamic resource allocation that best meets local needs.

IBM helped the Health Bureau to establish an Integrated Healthcare Platform built

To build the first retail superstores in Trinidad – traditionally a “Mom and Pop”

Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change (CMCC)
Better predicts climate change by numerical simulations and data analysis
Business challenge
CMCC, a research center dedicated to studying climatology and mid- to
long-term climate changes, aims at understanding the climate system at
global scale, with an emphasis on the Mediterranean Region, seeking also
collaboration among climate research organizations across Europe. The
Center has built an open, advanced modeling system that could contribute to
define climate change and its impacts in a variety of economic sectors.
Solution
Working with IBM Business Partner Computer Var, CMCC created a climate
simulation platform that allows massive numerical simulations, data storage
and analysis to create more accurate climate models. Users can then analyze
this data to determine patterns and project future changes. The new
modeling solution resides on clustered IBM Power™ 570 and IBM Power 575
server hardware supported by IBM System Storage™ DCS 9900 disk
systems.

Improves facility management and customer service with wireless tracking solution
Business challenge
Xingguang Park (XGP) is a major television park in China. Numerous people,
including movie stars, employees and visitors, enter the park daily. XGP
asked service provider China New Media Development Zone (CNM) to build
a wireless sensor network (WSN) in order to monitor the location of park
entrants and ensure their safety. The system would enable XGP to better
serve and guide visitors according to their registration level.
Solution
IBM Global Technology Services built a three-layer WSN on IBM System x
®
3650 servers. The sensor layer uses radio frequency identification (RFID)
tags to track people and equipment in realtime; the monitoring layer uses
digital cameras and wireless bulletin boards to track people and assets under
defined policies; and the workflow layer connects the sensors and monitors to
business applications and emergency command systems.

CheckFree Corporation, a subsidiary of Fiserv, supports electronic billing and
payment (EBP) for thousands of financial institutions. The rapid adoption of

IBM had noted an opportunity to improve the efficiency of its production efforts at
its semiconductor manufacturing facility in East Fishkill, New York. The site lacked
a robust enough scheduling agent to effectively coordinate the multiple, intricate
production processes while obtaining high utilization of capital intensive
equipment. As a result, raw materials and manufacturing assets (such as the
chemicals used in cleaning processes) were being inefficiently utilized, and time-

The site integrated a near-real time optimization based scheduling system into its
manufacturing execution system to drive more efficient management of site

Business Challenge
With no means to trace defective parts to the subset of vehicles affected by
them, auto manufacturers have—as a matter of safety—followed a sweeping
approach in which vehicles of entire model years are recalled. A consortium
of German automakers, suppliers, software companies and academia and
began a project known as LAENDmarKS to gain the ability to track and trace
at the parts level with a high degree of precision, from the point of assembly
all the way back to second- and third-tier suppliers.
Solution
Brought into the project by consortium member IBS AG, IBM helped design
and implement an open, secure parts tracking solution that enables parts
traceability at all levels of the supply chain. Using sensors, parts are uniquely
identified and captured at strategic points in the supply chain. IBM’s
breakthrough was to apply an SOA-based approach under which supply
chain data was abstracted into a separate event repository—independent of
applications—that could be tapped for multiple purposes.

Norkis Group, a large financing and vehicle retail company in the Philippines,
needed to better share its business processes across the organization. To do this,

Business Challenge
Ten years ago, Australia’s third-largest city and the state capital of Queensland,
Brisbane, formulated a strategy for making itself an economic powerhouse. At
some point, however, Brisbane reached a crossover point where its population
growth began to exert an adverse impact in the form of traffic congestion.
Queensland Motorways, which runs Brisbane’s major toll roads and bridges,
sought a way to minimize the traffic congestion and help keep Brisbane from
choking on its success.
Solution
Queensland Motorways worked with IBM to develop an intelligent Central System
for tolling. As vehicles drive under toll gantries, license plates are captured by
cameras and decoded via OCR engines. A key part of IBM’s solution, known as
the Identification, Rating and Interoperability Services (IRIS) subsystem, picks up
the information generated at the roadside and uses stored business logic to
execute a series of toll-related transactions, including calculating and sending the
bill to the customer.

The Need:
The company wanted to assist its local operations by creating a centralized
customer relationship management (CRM) solution that would provide an
overview of the activities of all 80 branches, and provide a platform for
analytics in the future. The idea was not to reduce the autonomy of the local
branches, but to provide extra strategic information to assist them.
The Solution:
IBM Global Business Services and IBM Global Technology Services helped
the in-house team implement Siebel CRM applications, and integrate them
with more than 20 different local customer databases used by the individual
branches. The Siebel applications leverage a 5GB Oracle 11.1.0.6 database,
licensed for up to 500 concurrent users. The applications and database run in
IBM AIX 6 environments, virtualized using IBM PowerVM on two IBM Power
595 servers, located at different data centers. The database and application
LPARs are mirrored between the two servers using IBM PowerHA clustering
technology, which ensures high availability even if one of the servers needs to
be taken offline.

Agrofert Group reduces operational costs by roughly 20
percent by increasing the efficiency of its SAP software
Business challenge
Agrofert Group (Agrofert), a large agriculture and chemical holding
company in the Czech Republic, had acquired a number of businesses
and was running more than 160 different operating systems across the
organization. This meant high development and maintenance costs and
slow and inefficient data collection and analysis. Frequently, one or more
of the local systems would go down, affecting overall business availability.

To support its global operations, Volkswagen has a corporate data center with three server
locations in Wolfsburg. A subset of 76 standalone competitive UNIX servers with different
web application middleware was hosted there. Using these servers, several Volkswagen
applications were pieced together on their own distinct systems. These were difficult to

locations in Wolfsburg. A subset of 76 standalone competitive UNIX servers with different

The need:
Growing from a single company to a multi-brand group of companies, North
American Nutrition Companies, Inc. (NANCO) wished to take advantage of
economies of scale. To achieve this goal, new SAP software would help the
company integrate and consolidate its information management, but the existing IT
infrastructure was not well suited to scale up to meet the business objectives.
The solution:
NANCO selected an IBM System i server, model 550, for its SAP applications, and
moved its existing server into backup and disaster recovery roles. Multiple logical
partitions (LPARs) allow NANCO to host all the operating companies on the same
physical server, and allow real-time data mirroring to provide continuous protection
from disaster.
The benefits:
Response times have been reduced from 1.5s to 0.3s, boosting productivity for
more than 200 users.
Low maintenance and operational costs are reinforced by low staffing costs: for
example, the company’s IT Department had four people supporting 85 users at a

Gemeente Goes hosts SAP applications for six municipalities on IBM i
The need:
Gemeente Goes and five other Dutch municipalities were running CiVision
Belastingen & Kadaster Suite, a qualified SAP Business All-in-One partner solution
from PinkRoccade Local Government, on a variety of IBM and HP platforms on
separate servers at their own data centers. Hardware costs were relatively high,
and obtaining local support was difficult and expensive.
The solution:
Working with PinkRoccade Local Government, the six municipalities consolidated
their SAP Business All-in-One environments into separate IBM i subsystems within
a single logical partition on an IBM Power 550 Express server running at the
Gemeente Goes data center. The subsystems also run a number of legacy
applications in mixed workload mode.

Royal Cup Coffee deploys a scalable, cost-effective
enterprise architecture with SAP software on IBM hardware
Business challenge
Having witnessed an annual business increase of 20 percent over the past
several years, Royal Cup Coffee needed to update its enterprise resource
planning (ERP) systems. In the past, the organization had standardized on
the SAP ERP application, but the underlying IT infrastructure was
struggling to keep pace with the growing volumes of business data and
higher user levels associated with the company’s success.
Solution
Royal Cup Coffee chose to migrate its SAP ERP systems onto an IBM
System i
®
570 server. The SAP software controls a number of back-office
operations, including financials, controlling, sales and distribution,
production planning and warehouse management. At present, the IBM
server is supporting roughly 1.4TB of SAP data that is accessed by around
150 users spread across 25 states.
