Land Water

BODY STRUCTURES OF ANIMALS FOR ADAPTATION AND SURVIVAL

HABITAT Is an ecological or environmental area where species of animal, plant, or other type of organism live.

ADAPTATION Is the structure or behavior that helps the organism to survive in its environment.

Terrestrial Animals - Animals that live on land. Aquatic Animals - Animals that live in water.

ADAPTIVE STRUCTURES OF ANIMALS LIVING ON LAND OR IN WATER

exoskeleton scales gills shell gills

scales - used for protection against diseases and help fishes swim underwater

Exoskeleton - outside skeleton. lobster shrimp Shell – body protection. mussels oyster

Gills - used for breathing underwater Through the years, all animals that live in water are able to adopt as they evolve. This is called adaptation.

On the other hand, terrestrial animals have body structures that help them adopt on land. These structure are used for protection, movement, and food consumption.

Fur - to keep them warm . Body Parts for Protection Feather - body covering; aid for flying.

Smooth Skin - used for breathing Body Parts for Protection In general, body coverings are used for protection.

Body Parts for Movement Legs - used for walking, running or swimming. Wings – used for flying

Animals on land have lungs for breathing.

Body Parts for Food Consumption

Body Parts for Food Consumption Sucking tubes Movable jaws Sticky tounge

Animals have the same mouth parts usually have the same food.

Animal groups according to the food they eat Carnivores Herbivores Omnivores Detritivores

Animal groups according to the food they eat Herbivores - animals that eat plants

Animal groups according to the food they eat Carnivores - animals that eat meat or other animals

Animal groups according to the food they eat Omnivores - animals that eat both meat or plants.

Animal groups according to the food they eat Detritivores - animals that eat dead or decaying organisms. earthworm millipede

GROUP ACTIVITY

Discuss further the activity using the following guide questions: Where do animals live? Describe their body coverings. What are these for? 3. What other parts do these animals have? What are their uses ? 4. Are all these parts important? 5. What have you learned in this activity?

Questions: Fish have lungs to breath under water. 2. Body structures of animals are adapted on their habitat. Ans. Yes Ans . NO

Questions: Shrimp, lobster and prawn have exoskeletons to cover their bodies. Ans. Yes 4. Adaptation is the behavior or structure that help animals survive on their own habitat . Ans. Yes

Questions: 5. Aquatic have the same body parts. Ans . NO
