Environmental Science A Multidisciplinary Subject By_Bhom Singh Rathore Seedling School of Nursing,JNU Jaipur (Nursing Tutor)

Environment meaning Environment can be defined as a sum total of all the living and non-living elements and their effects that influence human life. While all living or Biotic elements are animals, plants, forests, fisheries, and birds. non-living or Abiotic elements include water, land, sunlight, rocks, and air. The word Environment is derived from the French word “Environ ” which means “ surroundings” things , conditions or influences affecting life and Development of an organism. (ii) An Environment is everything that is around us, which includes both living and nonliving things such as soil, water, animals and plants, which adapt themselves to their surroundings. It is nature’s gift that helps in nourishing life on Earth. DEFINATION

Components of the Environment There are two components of the environment _ Biotic components Living things within an ecosystem, such as plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, and protists *Abiotic Components Non-living components of an ecosystem, such as water, soil, air, sunlight, temperature , .

The three types of biotic components in an ecosystem are producers, consumers, and decomposers:  Producers Also known as autotrophs, these organisms create their own food using energy and inorganic materials. Examples include Green plants and green algae.  By Photosynthesis. Consumers Also known as heterotrophs, these organisms get energy by consuming other living organisms. Consumers can be further categorized as herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and parasites.  Decomposers Also known as detritivores these organisms get energy from organic substances that were produced by producers and consumed by consumers. Examples include bacteria and fungi which obtain their energy from dead and decaying plant or Animal parts.   Biotic Components

Abiotic Components Abiotic components of an ecosystem are non-living factors that can be classified into three categories : Climatic factors: These include light, temperature, precipitation, atmospheric humidity, and wind . Organic factors : These include carbohydrates ,Lipids Inorganic factors: These include carbon , Nitrogen, oxygene ,calcium etc. the components formed by these inorganic substances.

Some important Environmental Seminars and Conferences . Indian Ecological Society International Conference An annual conference held by the Indian Ecological Society. For example, the 2022 conference focused on sustainable agricultural innovations.  NAU-IES-IUFRO Conference A conference held by Navsari Agricultural University (NAU). For example, the 2023 conference focused on tree-based land-use systems.  Indian Environment Congress A national conference organized by the Centre for Environment and Development. For example, the 2023 conference focused on sustainable waste management.   World Environment Conference An annual conference that focuses on topics such as climate change, environment protection, and sustainable development.  International Conference on Environment An annual conference that welcomes environmentalists, scientists, and academicians to discuss topics such as sustainability, waste management, and pollution.

Environmental Studies : A Multidisciplinary View . Defination given for Environmental indicates environment includes all the physical ,Biological surroundings an organism and their interactions . Thus ,in order to study environment one needs knowledge inputs from various Displines like ; * Life Sciences Including . Botany .zoology .Microbiology .Genetics . Biochemestry .Biotechnology These Subjects help to understand the biotic component and their interactions .

* Natural Sciences Including .Physics .chemistry . Methametacis .Engineering . Biochemestry .Technology These Subjects help to understand thephysical and Chemical structure of a biotic components.

* Social Sciences Including * Ecology *Management *Planning * Laws *Ethics *Sociology *Mass Communication These Subjects help to Dealing with socio economic aspects associated with Development * Technical subjects *Oceanography *soil engineering *Environmental engineering * civil engineering *chemical engineering Which deals with control of environmental pollution and Waste treatment

Objectiv es of Environmental Education Awareness:  Develop awareness of the environment and its problems Interdependence: Understand the interdependence of economic, social, political, and ecological factors  Skills: Develop skills in critical thinking, reasoning, evaluating, and decision making  Problem solving: Learn how to solve environmental issues Attitude: Develop a positive attitude towards the environment   Curiosity: Develop curiosity about environmental problems so that people are inspired to work on solutions   Sustainable living: Learn how to live more sustainably   Natural resources: Learn how to use natural resources more efficiently   International cooperation: Understand the importance of international cooperation in environmental planning

Need for public Awareness EN vironmental studies is a multidisciplinary field that connects many different areas of study to address environmental issues.   Public awareness is important for environmental studies because  it can help people understand the complexity of the environment and how to protect it

Understanding the environment Environmental studies provides a comprehensive understanding of the environment and its issues. It includes the study of the natural environment, the built environment, and the relationship between them. Addressing environmental challenges Environmental studies connects principles from many different areas of study to address complex environmental issues. Educating people Environmental studies can help educate people about their role in protecting the environment *Developing skills Environmental studies can help people develop skills to assess the environmental impact of human activities and to solve environmental problems.  *Creating concern Environmental studies can help people develop concern for the environment and motivate them to act to protect it.
