Theories of personality ( Part-3) By-Mr Pradeep K ., Nursing Tutor,AIIMS,Rishikesh

Many Theories of personalities have developed over the years. There are different perspectives on personalities.

1.Gordon Allport’s Trait Theory(1936) Gordon Allport ,a psychologist, proposed very first trait theory.

Allport’s theory asserts that no two individuals are alike. Allport regarded ‘traits’ as being responsible for these individual differences. According to Allport , trait is a predisposition to act in the same way in a wide range of situations.

Allport distinguished between common traits and individual traits. Common traits are shared by several people within a given culture. Individual traits are peculiar to the person and do not permit comparisons among people. They guide, direct and motivate an individual’s adjustment

Therefore, they accurately reflect the distinctiveness or uniqueness of his/her personality. Allport was deeply committed to the study of individual traits. He started calling them as ‘personal’ dispositions. Allport proposed that there are three types of personal dispositions

The proposed are - 1. Cardinal trait 2. Central trait 3.Secondary trait

1.Cardinal trait- According to Allport , these were rare and dominating traits that emerged as a person become older. Famous people were usually thought of in the context of their cardinal traits . A cardinal disposition is so dominant that all actions of the person are guided by it. Very few people possess cardinal disposition

Eg - (Ms Nightingale whose actions were driven by compassion for people) Narcissistic Charitable as Mother teresa Evil as Hitler Brilliant as Albert Einstein

2. Central traits- These are not as dominant as cardinal dispositions, but they influence the person’s behaviour in a very prominent way . Therefore, they are called the building blocks of personality. Eg - Honest, loyality Anxious, Friendly ,shy

3. Secondary trait- Secondary traits are similar to attitude and could be noticed only in some situations or in specific conditions. These are not very consistent and are thus less relevant in reflecting the personality of the individual. Eg - 1.Food and clothing preferences, specific attitudes, etc. may be considered as secondary dispositions. 2.A person who is usually very calm become anxious while delivering a speech.
