I.E “NUESTRA SEÑORA DE FÁTIMA” THE THREE RS OF THE ENVIRONMENT! WEEK 2 MISS: AYDA MARIBEL MEDINA RAMÍREZ

OUR CLASS RULES

THE TEACHER PRESENTS THE FOLLOWING IMAGE SO THAT THROUGH THE GROUPS FORMED THEY CAN SELECT THE LANDFILL IN WHICH EACH POLLUTING OBJECT IS LOCATED AND THUS PUT IT INTO PRACTICE IN DAILY LIFE. (REDUCE, REUSE OR RECYCLE)

THE TEACHER ASKS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: What do you do with the box? The articles are Reduce, Reuse or Recycle?

PURPOSE

EXERCISES

01 LET'S READ AND DO A BLOG THE THREE RS OF THE ENVIRONMENT People everywhere in the world produce a lot of rubbish but there is not enough space, and landfills are filling up quickly. If we want to save our planet, then the so-called three Rs are essential for learning how to deal with the waste we produce. The three Rs are reduce, reuse, and recycle. Here are a number of tips on what you can do to save the environment. REDUCE A good place to start is by buying things that don’t have a lot of packaging. Then there are items you may not use very often, so you might as well borrow them from someone instead of buying them. Nowadays, newspapers can be read online so buying the paper edition is not necessary. The same goes for emails and hence it is usually not necessary to print them out. Generally, the use of electricity can be greatly reduced by, for example, turning off lights that are not used. REUSE When you go shopping, refuse plastic bags and bring a bag with you instead. If you’re not buying a lot, a bag is not necessary to begin with. Reusable bags should be heavier and more durable. If you prepare your lunch at home, put it in a plastic lunch box. I always keep shoe boxes as they are great to store stuff. Many cities have collection points for used clothes. If you have clothes that are still in good shape, you can bring them to the collection points rather than throwing them away. RECYCLE Recycling is a process that makes it possible to create new products out of old ones. Paper, aluminum, glass and plastic can often be recycled. Glass has been used for thousands of years and is relatively easy to recycle. Aluminum can be repeatedly recycled quickly and easily. Paper is recyclable but it cannot be recycled forever. The small fibers in paper eventually become very weak so that they can’t be recycled into good paper anymore. Also, not every type of paper is recyclable as some high-quality paper is too expensive to recycle.

What are the three Rs of the environment? A

Read the text again. Are the statements True, False or Not Given? B The author suggests borrowing certain items rather than buying them. According to the author, shoe boxes can be very useful to store things. Used clothes can be donated. It’s not possible to recycle aluminum over and over again. Empty plastic bottles are relatively easy to recycle. ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( )

02 READ THE ARTICLE. Mount Everest: The Highest Garbage Dump in the World? Most people know that Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. However, there is another fact that many people don’t know: it has become one of the dirtiest mountains in the world. Mount Everest is one of the toughest and most exciting mountains to climb on Earth. It is not the coldest or the windiest place on Earth, but it comes close! These challenges make it one of the most attractive mountains for serious climbers. Since 1952, over 3500 climbers have reached the top. Unfortunately, most of them have left equipment and trash on the mountain. In fact, trash is now one of the biggest threats to the environment on Mount Everest. Local organizations have brought tons of trash down from the mountain. One of the most interesting projects handed over more than a ton of tin cans, glass bottles, and old climbing tools to artists in Nepal. The artists used the trash to create works of art. Then, they sold the art to raise money for local charities.1 The least expensive work of art cost $17, and the most expensive one cost $2400.

Check. Circle the correct Word to complete each statement. a According to the reading, Mount Everest is very clean / dirty. Climbing Mount Everest is very difficult / easy. Mount Everest is an unusual / a popular mountain for serious climbers. Climbers rarely / often leave trash on Mount Everest. People create art / charities from the trash on Mount Everest.

03 READ THE ARTICLE. We are running out of space in which to discard our garbage, and our current methods of disposing of it are end angering the environment. One solution to this problem is recycling. Recycling is the process of collecting used materials and remanufacturing them into new products instead of throwing them away. This process is important because it reduces the trash in overcrowded landfills, salvages materials that we can use to make new products, and saves our natural resources. Used products may be converted or reutilized in a number of ways. Paper is reprocessed into new sheets, glass is cleaned and remolded, and plastic is melted and formed into new products such as Carpet backing, fence posts, and drainage pipes. Recycling is being done worldwide. Japan recycles 95% of its bottles and 50% of its aluminum. Helping to solve the garbage crisis is something everyone can do if they just remember the three Rs: “Reduce, reuse and recycle”.
