Noun Phrases (NPs) :
Groups of words that function as a single unit, with a
noun as the central/head element
Can serve various grammatical roles (subject, object,
complement)
Not limited to just a single noun -can have complex
structure
NOUN PHRASES (NPS)
Pre-modifying elements (determiners, adjectives,
noun .) before the noun
Post-modifying elements (prepositional phrases,
relative clauses .) after the noun
MODIFIERS NOUN PHRASES (NP S)
Modifiers that come before the head noun
Pre-modifiers provide more information,
description, or details to the head (noun)
PRE-MODIFIERS IN NPS
1) Determiners used as modifiers of NP :
Definite article (the) e.g. I saw thecar. indefinite
article (a, an). e.g. I bought anapple for my lunch.
Demonstrativee.g. Thoseflowers over there are
lovely
Possessive determiners e.g. Theirnew car is very
nice
Genitivese.g. I saw Ali'scar
TYPES OF PRE-MODIFIERS
2) Adjective Phrase :
e.g. The intelligentstudents
e.g. Manystudents
e.g. A clever employee

3) Noun modify nouns
Chocolate cake: In this case, "chocolate" is a noun
that modifies the noun "cake" to specify the type of
cake.
Student handbook: Here, the noun "student"
modifies the noun "handbook" to indicate that it is a
handbook intended for students.

Modifiers that come after the head noun
Post-modifiers provide more information,
description, or details to the head (noun)
POST-MODIFIERS OF NOUN PHRASES
1) Prepositional phrase as a post-modifier can
be as in the following examples :
"The cat on the mat”
The prepositional phrase "on the mat" modifies
the noun phrase "the cat" by providing more
information about the location of the cat.
TYPES OF POST-MODIFIERS
2) Relative clause :
Relative clauses are clauses that modify a
noun or pronoun
They provide additional information about the
noun/pronoun
Introduced by relative pronouns like "who",
"which", "that", "whose", etc.

Defining relative clauses e.g. The city where I
was bornis very beautiful
Non-defining relative clauses e.g. The new
restaurant, which opened last week, has
already received great reviews

Pre-Modification
Provides initial descriptions, qualifications, and
identifying details about the noun
Establishes context and sets the stage for the noun's
meaning
Post-Modification

Adds additional details and nuance to deepen
understanding
