Noun Phrase NP (pre-modifiers)+HEAD(+post-modifiers) Pre-modifiers DET e.g. a car AP e.g. a new car N e.g. anew automatic car Post-modifiers PP e.g. the cat with three legs Rel clause(S) e.g. the cat which is lying on the mat. 17 جمادى الثانية 1431 Njood Al-amri

Determiners: e.g Some like it hot. Some people like it hot. You should have noticed that pronouns appear on their own to form the noun phrase; determiner appear with a head noun. 17 جمادى الثانية 1431 Njood Al-amri

There are three kinds of determiners : Pre-determiners - Central-determiners - Post-determiners - e.g. I met both my two friends Pre cent post 17 جمادى الثانية 1431 Njood Al-amri

Adjective Phrases (AP) : Adjective phrases are also used to pre-modify . nouns 17 جمادى الثانية 1431 Njood Al-amri Adjective phrases (AP ) AP (AdvP)+ A Function : 1.sC 2.oC e.g. 1. the dog is (quite disgustingly ) fat 2. John made Kate angry OR Function : pre-modifier within NP e.g. The fat brown dog chased a girl

e.g The fat dog chased a girl S NP VP DET AP N Vgp NP [trans] A AUX V DET N TENSE The fat dog (past) chased the girl S P dO 17 جمادى الثانية 1431 Njood Al-amri

Nouns: Nouns also serve to pre-modify other nouns . For example : -I bought a new computer game. -The electricity board sent her a nasty letter. In these cases the noun pre-modifier is closely connected to the head noun that the two can almost be considered one word. This illustrates that when nouns pre-modify other nouns they always come next to the head noun ; nothing else can come between them: * I bought a computer new game. 17 جمادى الثانية 1431 Njood Al-amri

N-Bar e.g. The smart child chased a dog - Which smart child chased a dog ? - That one One = smart child Smart + child is not full of NP since It doesn't contain a determiner , neither is it simply a noun (N) . So , we use theory called X-bar theory and call this constituent N-bar theory N-bar is an intermediate constituent , smaller than NP and larger than N . 17 جمادى الثانية 1431 Njood Al-amri
