PARABOLA ______________ TEACHER

OB JECTIVE Define a parabola. ( STEM_PC11AG-Ia-5 )

ACTI VITY GROUP 1 Instruction: Access the google Classroom. Open the link for a geogebra applet on Parabola. With your group, study the applet and put all your observations in the comment box.

ACTI VITY GROUP 2 Instruction: Study the given illustration. Each point has a corresponding coordinates. Investigate on the distances of the points with each other. Take note of all your observations.

ACTI VITY GROUP 3 Instruction: Explore the classroom. Look for real-life examples of parabola inside the room. Gather the materials and present to the class.

For group 1&2 Guide questions: 1 . What do you notice on the graph of the parabola? 2. What are the important points and features on the graph of the parabola? 3. What are the distances of the points with each other?

DRAG TEST

PARABOLA A parabola is one of the conic sections. FOCUS ( point F) Fixed point in the parabola.

DIRECTRIX ( line d ) Fixed line in the parabola.

Vertex Is the point where the Parabola crosses its axis of Symmetry.

PARABOLA The set of all points P such that its distances from point F and from line d are the same.

Real-life Application San Juanico Bridge

EVALUATION FACT BLUFF

1. The fixed point in the parabola is called “focus”. 2. The distance from the focus to a point along the parabola is called radius. 3. The directrix is the fixed line in the parabola.

4. Directrix is always perpendicular to the axis of symmetry. 5. Parabolas are having the same distance from the distance to any point along the parabola. 6. Moving the focus up and down affects the opening of the parabola..

7. Parabola is a set of all points P such that its distances from the focus and its distances from the line of directrix are the same. 8. If the parabola opens upward, the vertex is the lowest point . . 9. If the parabola opens downward, the vertex is the highest point.

10. Parabolas do not have real-life applications.

Assignment Directions: Investigate why do most bridges uses parabolic arch in designing its support system. You can create models for experiment to support claims. (project Parabolic Arch)

REFLECTION Shweta Gupta The value of a Parabola opening UPWARD is POSITIVE … And the one which is opening DOWNWARD is NEGATIVE. THE PARABOLA OF LIPS FOLLOWS THE SAME RULE.

GOOD DAY!
