Present continuous tense This tense describes an action in progress or the continuity of an action in the present time. In this the present participle (V4) form of the verb (+ ing form) is used. e.g. I am playing. You are playing. He is playing. Spelling rules while adding ' ing ' to the first form of a verb (i) If the verb ends with 'e' the final 'e' is dropped before adding - ing . eg . come + ing = coming. take + ing = taking write + ing = writing. move + ing = moving Exceptions - dye + ing = dyeing. see + ing = seeing

(ii) When the verb contains one syllable and it ends in a consonant preceded by a vowel, consonant is doubled before adding ' ing '. e.g. run + ing = running cut + ing = cutting sit + ing = sitting drop + ing = dropping Exceptions - Verbs ending with 'u, w, y and x' the above rule is not followed e.g. grow + ing = growing. draw + ing = drawing fix + ing = fixing. say + ing = saying

……..continue…… (iii) If the verb ends with ' ie ', the final ' ie ' is replaced by 'y' before adding - ing . e.g. lie + ing = lying. die + ing = dying tie + ing = tying (iv) If the verb ends with 'I', preceded by a vowel, 'I' is doubled before adding - ing . e.g. travel + ing = travelling. quarrel + ing = quarrelling (A) Affirmative (Positive) Sentences Pattern – Subject + is/am/are + V1 + ( ing )..... Examples: 1. Mohan is writing a letter. 2 . The girls are going to school. 3 . The boys are playing a football match. 4. The carpenter is making a chair. 5 . I am singing a song.

……continue….. B Negative Sentences Pattern – Subject + is/am/are + not + V1 + ( ing )..... Examples: 1- I am not reading a book. 2 - Ram is not playing in the field. 3- She is not playing with her doll. 5- They are not going to the market. 4- The cow is not grazing grass. Rule – The adverb 'not' is used just after is/am/are in the sentence .

…….continue….. C Interrogative Sentences Pattern – Is/Am/Are + Subject + V1 + ( ing )...... ? Examples: 1- Are the girls reading in the room ? 2- Is the sun rising in the sky ? 3- What are you doing in the room ? 4- Am I not writing a letter ? 8- How many girls are taking part in the drama? 5- Are you not going to school today ? 9- How much milk is the child drinking ? Rule 1. The helping verb Is/Am/Are is put in the beginning of the sentence . (See sentence No . 1, 2, 3 and 4 above)

……continue…… Various Uses of the Present Continuous (Progressive ) Tense Form (a) To describe an action in progress, whose beginning and completion are not known . Examples: I am writing letters. The child is weeping. The birds are singing.

…..continue….. (b) To describe an action in progress, but not necessarily at the time of speaking. e.g. I am learning driving. He is writing a book on grammar. (c) To express action definitely planned for the near future. Words like 'tomorrow, next week ' are also used here. e.g. chala is coming here next week.

…..continue….. d To show changes, trends, developments, progress or a situation that is temporary or for a period of time around the present time . e.g. He is spending the summer in Europe. Your handwriting is improving. The village is changing, but it is still undisturbed. E. To express an action that has become a habit for doing it over and over again . It can also show a mood of irritation, if we use 'always' between the helping verb and main verb. e.g. You are always speaking loudly. This scooter is always troubling me. She is always talking on the mobile phone.

Verbs normally not used in ‘ ing ’ form Following verbs are generally not used in continuous form. 1. Verbs of perception showing the experience of sense organs. I see a picture. (Correct) I am seeing a picture. (Incorrect) I hear a song. (Correct) I am hearing a song. (Incorrect)

Verbs showing mental process such as think, know, mind, remember, forget, understand etc. I know you. (Correct) I am knowing you. (Incorrect)
