PRESENT CONTINUOUS | PRESENT PROGRESSIVE
PRESENT CONTINUOUS The present continuous verb tense indicates that an action is happening now, frequently, and may continue into the future. (El presente continuo se utiliza para hablar de acciones que están sucediendo en el momento del habla) Example: Aunt Christine is warm ing up the car while Scott is brush ing his teeth. They are eat ing at Scott’s favorite restaurant today, Polly’s Pancake Diner.
PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE’S FORMULA Use the present continuous tense with the appropriate “to be” verb and a dynamic verb. A dynamic verb shows action and/or process. Example: Please keep the noise down. The girl is studying .
PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE’S FORMULA (+) Affirmative: Subject + to be (am/is/are) + verb (- ing ) + complement I am leav ing work now. I’ll be home in an hour. We are investigat ing a crime. She is practic ing her dance routine. The boys are cook ing lunch for their family.
PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE’S FORMULA (-) Negative: Subject + to be (am/is/are) + not + verb (- ing ) + complement You are not listen ing to the radio. She is not do ing homework at the moment. (?) Interrogative: To be (am/is/are) + subject + verb (- ing ) + complement + ? Is your mother recover ing well from surgery? Are the children sleep ing ?
WHEN NOT TO USE THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS STATIVE VERBS: Stative verbs show a state of being that does not show qualities of change. These verbs can stay in the simple present. Describen un estado de ser o un estado mental. No se utilizan para describir una acción . G eneralmente se refieren a emociones, sentidos, creencias, opiniones, relaciones, posesiones y estados de ser. Usualmente no los usamos en el presente continuo.
WHEN NOT TO USE THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS Incorrect: Aunt Christine is preferring the honey pancakes over the peanut butter ones that her husband loves. Correct: Aunt Christine prefers the honey pancakes over the peanut butter ones that her husband loves. Inc orrect: I am believing that love at first sight is existing . Correct: I believe that love at first sight exists .

WHEN NOT TO USE THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS Note that some verbs can be either stative or dynamic, depending on the specific sense in which they are used. For example: the verb “ think ” may describe a fixed opinion or belief (in which case it’s stative) or a process of thought or consideration (in which case it’s dynamic). I am thinking that Paul will arrive tomorrow. I think that Paul will arrive tomorrow.
