Introduction 1:1 student ASD, ADHD, ODD, PDA, Sensory defensiveness, Anxiety. It’s important to identify which diagnosis you are dealing with to identify which strategy to use to manage behaviour /anxiety.

Goal Help the student to maintain a better mood throughout the day by reducing their levels of anxiety. By maintaining a better overall mood during the day, there will be less extreme/externalising behaviours and less demands. Hypothesis

Base Line D ata C ollection Baseline data was collected from week 1-2

How the Zone data was measured Green zone Calm, observably happy. Talking about appropriate topics. Shows kindness to others. Blue Zone Crying Not wanting to talk Expressing feelings of regret for his behaviour  Yellow Zone Very excitable Breaking things and takes pleasure in it. Often very pleased to see things break. Makes inappropriate comments. Becomes very egocentric. RED Verbally abusive. Becomes physically threatening Runs away, leaves the school, hides. Screaming, crying, combination of both. Makes violent threatening comments about others.

Evidence Based Strategies “People with demand anxiety will be less likely to have their anxiety triggered if they are feeling safe and comfortable . This might result from being around people they trust or having slept well.” 1) maintaining a good working-relationship which is founded on trust. 1) Helping him to feel comfortable by keeping things light hearted: not allowing things to get too serious. “When demand anxiety is triggered, it is more likely to be manageable if the demand doesn’t just TAKE effort, but also RETURNS a feeling that is pleasurable.” 3) Decrease demands, maximise returns. functional capitulation (giving-in) Strategic capitulation involves understanding why the student is agitated and giving them what they want.

Progress Data and Reporting Week 1-2: Base Line data Weeks 3-6: implementation of strategies

Potential issues with strategies Demanding behaviour reinforced by people capitulating all the time. Strategy of “stopping giving in to demands” will result in more escalation, suspension, and eventually expulsion.

Alterations: reducing the demands that he hasn’t stated out-loud” so then you are not in a position of capitulating to everything he says out-loud. when you do have to capitulate try to understand where the anxiety is coming from so you can help alleviate the anxiety without necessary capitulating totally every time.
